Air Conditioner Noise & Gas Cap

My Sky has a growling sound when I turn on the Air Conditioning. It sounds like it is coming from the compressor. A friend of mine who has a Cadilac said his GM car has the same kind of growling sound. Is this usual or can I expect GM to fix it?

I have also noticed that the gas cap is different than the other cars I have owned. It is touchy at being closed just right. Usually I would close the cap and let it click a few times to let me know it is closed. With the Sky, I just turn it a quarter turn. If too far, it won't catch. This is strange to me. Does anyone else notice this?

Yep...had the same exact growling noise from my A/C compressor. Had it replaced back in November with a "supposedly" newly redesigned compressor...but of course, by that time...it was too cold to need the A/C. However, I did run it just to test and see if the noise was gone...and the verdict was...not exactly. Ok, so it wasn't as loud and obnoxious as it was with the original compressor...but it still makes a slight growling noise.

Thanks for Reply

Thanks Linda for your feedback. I am going to wait until the weather is warmer before having the dealer look at it. I will use your quote as a concern.

Otherwise, I love the car. I have owned 28 different cars including Hodas and Toyotas. I have had two turbo MR2s and a Turbo Supra. Even though my Sky is not a turbo, I love it. The performance, handling, balance and suspension all work together well. I have to say, I am truly impressed.

GM released Dealer Service Bulletin # 06-01-39-016 in late December 06 for the A/C noise condition.

Any chance that you might have more details on this particular service bulletin? Did it mention a permanent fix for the problem?

Nah there are about three people on this forum that had problems with closing the gas cap. The way I do it is with my left hand. That way I do not tommy torque it. Once on click three times...Skip...No cross threading allowed...

I have trouble every now and then. Sometimes it just won't catch. I turn it... it clicks... but give it a little tug and it pulls right out. I must look like a total idiot sometimes trying to get the stupid thing to catch. Tried to demonstrate the problem to the dealer, but, of course, it worked perfectly every time.

Service Bulletin didn't fix noise

I've had my Sky in twice for the A/C noise. First time, a new compressor. Second time, service bulleting said to replace support bracket. It still growls like a hungry lion and sometimes it's so loud I hear it with the top down at 70. That is NOT normal. I'm going to try to record the noise and then play it for my Saturn dealer. They've only had A/C in cars since the Thirties, so you'd think the idiots in Detroit would get it right by now.

One more update. The service bulletin does not make a permanent fix. Saturn Corp finally admitted it's a design flaw they aren't going to be fixing in the foreseeable future. They just offered to make one car payment and extend the warranty for 4 years as a"good will gesture". I don't think I'll accept as I don't want to cut off any recourse. So, keep going in to the shop, call corporate customer service and make a regular bother of yourself. Maybe, just maybe they'll fix the problem.

Air conditioner

Got my Sky in the third week of July/
the tem here has been around 32 to 35 degrees, about 88 to 93 degrees for you us folks. The air conditioner works great with no noise at all. You can't hardly hear the compressor even when idling

Got 4500 and no AC noise in HOT TX so AC on almost always. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones so far as no problems whatsoever yet, ie, diff, fender rubs, rattles, etc.

A/C Noise

My Sky also HAD a growling sound when I turn on the Air Conditioning. When I took it to service the Service Manager already knew about the problem and had ordered the parts to have it fixed. This was in March of this year and now I have NO noise at all. I have attached the service invoice so maybe it can help.
