Blown engine on 2007 redline (17k miles)

Ever since I can remember I was blowing alot of black smoke. First time I took notice was when I added a Magnaflow exhuast and the tips would always get ugly black and I was constantly cleaning them till I just gave up on the carbon build up. Then I read a thread on here about a recall on the spark plugs for my vin #. I took it to the dealership and told them onf the black smoke and there was a recall for my vin # for the stock spark plugs. I got the car back 2 days later and i could tell no differance and just decided to live with it and asumed this was a natural act for this type of engine. Shortly later (aproximatly 8k on the odomiter) I took this hot chick out on a joy ride and nailed it entering the highway. I heard some kind of clanking at/around 4k rpms as the engine was under load. I backed off the gas a little and and the noise went away. From that point I would hear this knocking/chattering noise on rare ocasions. I knew there was a problem with the engine but I also knew didnt have much faith in the mechanics at the dealership especially if the car didnt always make the noise and iut would be a little difficult to find the real problem. The car currently has 17k and I installed a bsr tuner kit some where around 10k miles and loved the power. I dont want people to think the bsr mod cuased this problem cuase the problem was there way before I installed the tuner kit. Any ways I was waiting for the problem to get worse till I took it to the dealerrship since I work 80 plus hours a week and dont have time to bring it back and forth several times to get the car fixed and after this last time I dropped it off to the dealership I proved that was probaly the smartist move and ill explain why. OK I dropped the car off 2 weeks ago for the reasons above and there was a check engine light that had been stuck on for a long timewhich onstar was able to tell me that cylinder 3 was misfiring on ocasion but not constantly. The dealership first told me my turbo was out and was a little surprised but figured they knew wheat they were doing. A week went by and the dealership informed me that they installed a new turbo and are finishing up the work on the misfiring and told me I should have my car back later that day. But that wasnt the case, they jumped the gun on the turbo being out And didnt check the engine well enough cuaes the later found after installing the new turbo they still had a misfire and later did a compression check to find out cylinder 3 only had 80 psi's. The dealership is now ordering me a new engine and will probaly have my car a month or maybe even longer depending how long it takes to get one of them turbo engines. My belief is that the engine has been like this since I bought it and im glad i waited to get the car fixed since I would have probaly had to take the car back to the dealership several times instead of just once. Im really glad that the bsr unit can reload the origanal settings in my computer or the dealership might have thrown that in my face as the cuase of the problems even though I know that the engine had these problems before I used the mod. Ill keep this thread updated as I wait for a engine. If you have had the same problem please respond to this thread

thanks to all that reads this

Well it sucks that you wont have your car to drive for another month BUT you will have a new engine and your car will be happy and you didn't have to hassle them to fix all of it like some people have had to do.
Keep us informed please.

The clanking was ping. iIt destroys gas engines. Thats why turbos are for diesels.

Actually it's called knock and it can happen to anything. N/A or turbo.

Just out of curiosity, anybody know what the stock compression is supposed to be?

I also LOL that all the kids at the dealer did was plug in a computer and have it tell them what parts to replace, rather than take 5 minutes and check the compression.

Compression should be around 190psi, not exactly sure but its 180psi on a 8.5:1 compression motor.

Ya all the "mechanics" love the scantool, tells them exactly what to replace. If it doesnt then they read the book and if this happens check this, and if that happens check that. You dont even need to think at all...

The engine is on order and should be here some time next week. The dealership is also installing a Hahn intercooler while the engine is out. Thought it was the perfect time to do it.

I will definately keep this post updated.

If you don't mind me asking. where do you live? State/county? Just wondering which coast your dealership is on. Hope all goes well from here on out with your engine swap.

GLAD YOU POSTED THAT JOHN, I WAS JUST ABOUT TO LOOK FOR IT.

This already happened to John D and it cost him gray hair and about 3 years off his life, but at least it is fixed. And if they tried to blame his CAI, then YES THE BSR TUNE WOULD HAVE CASUED YOU GREIF!

Don't know if the carbon build up is a factor is happens all the time. A lot of my old turbo and NA cars get carbon build up at the tail pipe.

What type of fuel where you using? 93 or lower?

Big update: Got the reason the engine bew up

Saturn stated that the turbo has engine oil that runs through it to lubricate the turbine. Well the seal broke and the turbo bloew enginre oil althrough out the whole air/turbo intake including the intercooler. Basically I ran trhe car with 1 qt of oil to the dealership which cuased the engine to blow acording to saturn. What puzzels me is lack of a oil engine light going on. I maintained my car with mobile 1 synthetic and ill be honest I didnt check my oil every time I filled my tank with gas but im very suprised a dumby light never went on to let me know that my engine was in danger and losing oil. I wasnt leaking any on the ground ( I have a new house I would have seen it ) it was shooting out the exhuast. Im wondering if the seal was broken from day 1 or what but I am a little concerned that my car will never be the same afer they replace the engine. I did order a hahn intercooler while the engine was out and they say it will be another 2 weeks cuase they forgot the some seals. Looks like my sky will live at the dealership for 6 or more weeks. The bright side is that they gave me a outlook to rack miles on. After going through this I advise every one to check there oil on a daily basis since thsi car can fail to tell you it is at a dangerouse oil level and on star, well it just sucks since it couldnt pick up such a simple sensor. My engine could have been saved if there was a adequate sensor if there is one at all on the car. I welcome all comments and questions at this time. Thanks for paying attention.

Kudos to the dealer for being responsive and accomodating. Too often we only hear of the dealers who are not doing well by their customers, but it's like anything else...you can have 1000 satisfied customers, but you never hear about those, it's number 1001 who had an issue that you hear about.

Good luck with the repairs, and please let us know if we can help in any way.

Thank you for all the support and I have a question. I know a long time ago when the so called cold air intakes were first introduced (fujitsu ect.) thdey were actually succking up hotter air the the origanal stock filter system and dynoing less then stock. Gm now makes there line of cold air intakes and I was wondering if any one has dynoed it and/or will it help since i have a larger exhuast. And if the Gm one doesnt help has any one made a real intake that gave the engine gains?

Btw I feel cool that bill hahn read my post :P Thanks bill, your a legend in the turbo industry and ill continue buying my parts from you all since you have some of the best techs and customer service. See I needed my intercooler right away and they didnt have one but they were so acomidating with my situation (with the engine being out I was getting a super deal from saturn for the install) that they sent me a special deal on a scratch and dent model that wont hurt the performance and no one will see ding where it is

pss The outlook is pimped out and loaded and had only 16 miles on it. It is a nice truck and I enjoy the drive and change, im buying lots of big things I couldnt haul around before like poker tables grocerys kegs of beer ect...
