Convertible Top Repaired - Not Allowed to Lower the Top????

Okay, I'm hoping that some of you folks that have had your convertible top repaired can help me out.

My car has been at the dealership this week to have the convertible top fabric replaced in accordance with the service bulletin repair discussed in this thread, Convertible Top Wear - Pontiac Solstice Forum

The dealership sent the work out to an upholstery specialist, and I realize that they are just passing along the instructions they were given. But they are telling me that I can't put the convertible top down for two weeks, because the "top fabric needs to stretch out."

I certainly would have waited until top-down driving season was over to get the work done if I realized that this would be the case, and the instructions in the service bulletin certainly don't mention this at all.

So my question is, have any of you heard of this kind of requirement? If you have had this or a similar repair done, did you have to leave the top up for a period of time?

I am pretty pissed that I was not made aware of this before work was initiated. I realize it is probably not the dealership's fault, but I can't believe that I'm not gonna be able to enjoy my car for two weeks!

i have not had the top problem, but it sounds odd.....stretch out? folding the top down stretches it out. I could possibly understand if there are any adhesives involved to allow the time for it to set up before your stretch it by folding the top. i can maybe understand letting the fabric relax and "take set",maybe just maybe, but i honestly don't know, so it is only conjecture.

Ouch!

I would call the dealer and ask for the number to the shop. Maybe they can clarify this for you. If not, you can hang out with Steve on Saturday. Good luck!

Well, after talking it over with the service manager (and applying a little calm logic to the situation) I'm not too worried.

Thinking it through, I figure the worst that can happen is once I release the top latch, the fabric will be so tight that it will be hard to pull it forward far enough to latch it to the windshield again.

But I'll have so many strong men with me at the Drive-In on saturday, I'm sure you guys will be able to get it up for me.

When my top was replaced - I was never told that.

But they replaced the top at the dealership - and it was an entire new top, not just the fabric...

Don't know if that makes a difference!

Yeah, I'm figuring that because they only replaced the fabric, the canvas is new and it is super-tight.

The service manager said it took the uhpholstery specialist 8 hours to do the repair, when the TSB stated 3 hours of labor. A lot of that time was probably getting the fabric stretched out and onto the frame.
