I've never understood why people think the standard filter is a PITA? I LOVE it. It's so easy to change, without having to scrabble underneath the car and getting pools of oil everywhere when you take it off like you do with a regular spin-off. Sure, you need an extension on your socket wrench, but so what?
I agree, I like it where it is, nice, clean, tucked out of the way, easy access and if there is anything that gives me an excuse to buy more tools or special tools, I'm all in...
Do you guys have a 2.4 or 2.0? On my 2.4 there are several wires and a hard plumbed hose that are in the way, I wish it was straight down. I actually have to put my extension in at an angle, I have been using a 1/2" drive socket and extension. Maybe I need to buy smaller 3/8" drive tools, I was just using what I had already for the size huge socket on top.
It just registered that you must be using a standard 32mm socket. If you are, this will be a PITA. You need to get a low-profile 32mm filter socket, it will make all the difference in the world.
One of mine is a 2.4. Yes, there are some obstructions, but even at that it beats getting under the car. I use a universal joint and the special filter wrench, and have no problems.
