Is a dirty tail pipe on my RL normal?

Hi All...

I’m very excited that my new GT exhaust for my RL arrived the other day, but before I put it on I want to make sure I don’t have a problem. I have about 2,800 miles on my RL and both tail pipes are really dirty, with a coating of black soot like junk all over. It comes off easily on my finger.

Is this normal or something to be concerned about?

Normal. I wipe my Magnaflow tips off with an old sock everytime I garage the car.

Is this the same sock you kept under your bed as a teenager?

Doing a soot watch on my RL as we speak, put in the hotter 41-108 plugs last week, will see if they make a difference on the soot buildup on the magna-flows and back of the RL.

It is most deffinitely normal. The car is probably running a little rich which will cause the tips to turn black. On my friends GT-R his entire left side of the back bumper and trunk lid are discolored for the same reason. Although he has no cats and shoots 4 foot flames out the exhaust!

Cheers,

Brian

It may be a hotter plug. Might also be colder. Could even be a different tip projection depth. The new AC sparkplug numeric naming convention doesn't give you any clues as to what the plug is about. But don't take my word for it: http://www.acdelco.com/parts/sparkpl...tification.jsp

In the old days, the numbers told you the heat range. I haven't had any luck in finding a table that decyphers what the particulars are on the AC plugs. All you can say at this point is that the 108 is different in some way from the 102.

there was a bulletin that came out about 2 months ago that if your car is misfiring that they will put in a hotter burning spark plug.

Ah, okay, No misfires here. ( Let's not tie this response to the sock responses )

Mine are black and I'm getting 32 mpg at 75 mph. Ain't changing a thing except to clean it off when I wash the car.

He said at 75mph so that's highway mpg. I also get that much on the highway. The display on the car will average all your driving together. If you want to know what just your HIGHWAY mileage is, get on the highway....and reset your mpg. give it about 10-20 minutes of highway time, and look again. I did that once on my trip to Atlantic City (about 110 miles of pure highway) and at the end my display said 39 I was drafting (at a safe distance) behind an 18 wheeler most of the way that was doing 80. I figured i'd stay behind him and just cruise.
