Engine bogs and almost dies when slowing.

This started last night and still continued this morning. Whenever I let my foot off the gas and the car slows down (especially when coming to a stop), the engine RPM goes down to 4-500 RPM and the car begins to vibrate as the engine struggles to stay going. After a couple seconds it recovers and the RPM jumps back up.

It almost acts as though the clutch is not disengaging but I have it fully depressed.

Take the car in. If it does it consistently, it will show up in the datastream. Sounds like an idle air control valve fault.

A quick question -- was your A/C on? I seem to remember this being a problem for some last summer (2.4's) and I too noticed it once or twice. But I rarely run the A/C so I don't think of it.

Mine still does that when I have the AC turned on. Ive been meaning to get it checked out since i posted about it September of last year. None of my other Saturn vehicles do this and i dont think it should be normal.

No my AC was not on neither directly nor in recirculate mode.

I will get it checked out but I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem.

I thought about the IAC but it only happends when it decelerates.

That's when you'd expect it to happen if the IAC looses control.

I just had a problem with my catalytic converter....its was bogging down my engine, like the more I wanted to step on it the more it bogged down almost to the point of turning off. The check engine light would turn on for about 5 seconds and then turn back off by itself. I took it in to the dealer and they said it was the cat, they replaced it and now shes as good as new. hope this helps

I had a similar problem on my old Celica.

Here's a question for you. Standing still, place car in gear but keep clutch pressed down. Does your car start to inch forward or rpm drop? If so, you're clutch may be coming up. In my case, my clutch master cylinder was bad and was leaking pressure. It would cause the car to release the clutch and engage the gear no matter where the pedal position was. Just a thought.

Clutch... cat are both good ideas. Best thing is to just drop it off to get looked at.

Same here. It happened last summer (delivered June 6, 06). I haven't noticed it this winter. It happened a couple of time recently. I also think its only when the A/C is on. All winter around here has been mostly top down days without the A/C on.

Just to clarify, there isn't an IAC (Idle Air Control) valve on this engine.

The ETC (throttle blade) under computer control does what it needs to control idle.

Well this morning it hardly did it at all, I doubt I would have even noticed it if I were not looking for it. So either it cured it self or this will be an intermittant problem (one that never happends when you bring it into the dealer). Guess I will just keep an eye on it for now.

Mine did this but it seems to be only when I have the air on. Which was when I wanted to make sure that it worked. Afterall this is a convertible I don't need the a/c

AC might run even when AC light is off...

Keep in mind also that most modern cars also run the air conditioning when you have selected any of the defrost settings on your climate control system (not the rear window defroster). In my experience, most of the brands do this to pre-dry the air they are blowing on the windshield (usually it is buried somewhere in the owner manual -- mine isn't handy at the moment), and most also do not turn on the indicator light to let you know that they've done it (it's kinda like a little secret).

One sure way to turn off the AC is to turn the fan to the off (zero) position -- that will not necessarily stop the flow of air into the car, but it will certainly turn off the air conditioning system.

Next time it happens, try turning the fan off to see if it goes away.

The fan was off, was not on reciculate and the AC was not on. It was for some other reason it happened. It has not happened since despite using the AC for the last few days.
I'll chalk it up to a gremlin for now.

Mine has AC problems and my car have difficulties in starting. The clutch gear doesn't engage, my trusted mechanic pointed out the master cylinder has to be replaced.Good thing I found some good quality of the parts so I bought also a good quality saturn spark plug to get out of the stalling issue.

If I have read this right, Valistener you have a manual transmission. Mine is automatic and has recently started doing the same. I have noticed the last few times that my A/C was on. I turned off my A/C and it did not do this again but I was close to work so not sure if it will happen again this afternoon. I can't remember if it was on the first time it happened. I told my husband and he said I probably had just got some bad gas. Did you get yours fixed and what was the problem if so? I would like to print a copy of this for him. Thanks for the good info!!!

I think I had this happen to me last night. It was really hot out and I had the top down but was running the A/C. When I'd slow to a stop light with the clutch depressed, I would feel a slight shake/vibration from the engine and you could feel the shifter shake a little like it's trying to recover from idle. When I turned the A/C off, it didn't seem to do it anymore. Has anyone ever got this situation diagnosed by the mechanic?

Have you tried depressing the clutch when slowing instead of keeping it engaged? Sorry, couldn't resist. After my A/C problems, I'm gettle a little goofy.

That's when it happens.. When you depress the clutch and the RPM's start dropping you can see the needle dip below 1K for a moment, it bogs for a few seconds, then the needle moves back up to idle speed. Anyone had this diaged by a mechanic yet?

Somewhat new to the board, as well as new 07 Sky. However, I have indeed noticed that if the AC is on, the car is 'rougher' on the idle, when coming to a stop.

'Tis a stick, and not an automatic.

Because I am lazy , can someone recap the issues they were having, and the resolution from previous posts?
