GM Bulletin # 08153 For Brake Symptoms

Took a road trip from just north of Nashville to Pensacola and back this week. This morning on the way back as I crossed back into TN I got a ck engine light. I pulled into the rest area and called ONSTAR to perform diagnostics. They told me that it appeared to be an emisions problem, but nothing serious and to go to the dealer at my convienience.

I went straight to the dealer, and they said that the code was P013A, O2 sensor too rich. Ulitmately cleared but here is where the brakes come in.

While waiting the service advisor came out and told me that they wanted to make the GM recomended repair for our brake issue. I was told that they were going to change the programing to increase the brake vacum.

Has anyone else had this done? I will post my observations after I have driven her for awhile.

A thousand miles this week with most of it top down was most excellent!

So glad you posted this. Had my Sky two days and have the brake problem of low vacum at startup. Almost hit the boat backing out of the garage to discover no brakes.

jonagirl,
I wait until the car idles down, about 30 seconds to a minute and I have enough vacum presure. If I try to move before that I have "crunchy" feeling brakes. I know the feeling of almost hiting the boat in the basement.

Interesting comment. I thought the programming dealt with the Optimized Hydraulic Brake (OHB) function, not the vacuum. I find it hard to believe there is any "programming" that can increase the vacuum. Vacuum is pulled from the manifold. There is no place in the manifold to squirt in bits and bytes...and even if you could, they don't create vacuum. The possible exception is programming that runs the engine higher on first start and then quickly retards the throttle, which might build vacuum more quickly in manifold and subsequently in the brake vacuum cylinder.

The OHB is computer driven...so bits and bytes could make more direct difference at that point.

I had a similar thought. Of course you can't completely rule out that they're just not mentioning the "install the pump" part. (Someone reported reprogramming being involved with the pump installation also, if I remember correctly.) It will be interesting to hear more details after the updates are made.

At the very least, it's good to hear that a dealer is taking action on this before being asked to.

That's what I did! Freaked me out....a little disappointing in a new car though Had my Z4 for nearly four years and only took it in for oil change.
As long as I have brakes AFTER the warm up period I can handle the issue. I read where some lose it after cruise control too....scary

I just had a new OS installed on the ECU. I'll see this morning if it makes any difference with the brakes. Usually I let the car idle for a bit before I move it. But, today I'll start it then go right away to see how it is.

I'll let you guys know later today.

Believe it or not, this new OS does seem to improve the braking on initial engine start up. It's not absolutely perfect, but it definitely made a very noticeable difference.

A 44 year old DOM with a 23 year old French chick for his avatar.

No....wait...in certain circles that is a perfect pre-requisite for President.

Seriously, I am only interested in her VOICE.

I had this done before the actual bulletin came out when they needed to fix my wastegate solenoid...but it didn't make any difference at all in my RL.

Maybe I should go back now that they have a real bulletin about it...

Cold start RPM varies between 1,300-1,500. This "fix" did absolutely nothing, it may be worse.

The engineer in my is really wondering what they think the problem is, and what they are doing to fix it. They really should get three of us together:

1. Someone who says "no problem".
2. Someone who says "problem sometimes".
3. Someone who says "big problem".

Diagnostic the three, and have a go.
