Grinder

I was doing some spirited driving on the highway, and I noticed that when I shifted hard into 4th, it wouldn't set in. I'd have to baby it in like I was driving normally through downtown.. anyone else have a problem or solution for this?

Haven't heard that one before that I can recall. Doesn't sound normal for our little truck transmission. Ya might be due for a trip to service.

I had trouble shifting into 3rd on two occasions but I just chalked it up to being a brand new car and me just not being used to it. Hopefully yours was operator era as well

3rd gear likes to grind and not go in for me sometimes. I'm taking it to the dealer again tomorrow, hopefully they'll do something about it this time

If you find out anything let me know. I don't wana take it in and hear them say "I didn't find anything wrong, we test drove it and everything is fine." Pretty much it translates to me, "You've wasted our time and are imagining things, go away."

My Civic did that shifting into second when it was new.

Turns out it was me.
I was letting off the clutch a split second too soon. After I adjusted to the car things were fine.

Thats what happened the first time I took it there. So I'm going to drive this time. If they tell me I'm shifting too quick or whatever, I'm going to tell them its a sports car with only 2k miles on it. It should handle some spirited driving.

If I have a problem like this it is usually because I am not being decisive enough when shifting. As Cerberus said, these are truck transmissions. Shift it like you mean it, but make sure you don't release the clutch early.

I have occasionally had the same experience, primarily in 2-3 shifts. The throw for that shift is a little long, and if you get impatient with the clutch you will miss the gear.

Spirited driving and a bad shift are two different things. My timing was only off by a hair on the Civic, I was letting off just a split second too soon. Once I figured out what worked shifting it certainly didn't hold me back when I wanted that car to go.

Well I've also had times where it wouldn't even go into 3rd gear. My foot is holding the clutch to the floor and 3rd is just grinding away and not going in.

I know its not me, I haven't even owned an automatic so I think its safe to say I know how to drive a manual

Casper doesn't complain about shifting.

Between my Austin Healey, Triumph TR4, Corvette and finally a Triumph TR7 .... I don't miss the left leg exercise at all. But "ya'll" enjoy.

Yep, I'd say that's definite proof it's not you.

And FWIW, I've only had vehicles with manuals too. You won't catch me driving a vehicle with an auto tranny if I have any say in the matter..

I'm sure there are folks older than me here (56 years young) with manual trannies ..... but just wait til you get old and "forgetful" and downshift into reverse a few times .....

(Is the shift pattern still shaped like the letter "H" kinda????) lolololol

Can't shift into reverse without going into neutral first.

And yes, it's still "H" shaped, revers is right under 5th gear.

There is also an interlock that prevents 5th to Rev shifts.

I'm on an auto tranny w/ this car for the first time since 1996 because the Capital Beltway in DC is better for parking than driving. That being said though, every manual I've ever driven has little quirks in its shift pattern / clutch. Some are also way more forgiving than others. My little S2000 was soooo forgiving (its a Honda after all), whereas the M3 was a mean spirited bastard that punished poor shifting heavily. Since you just got the car I would err on the side of "you" vs. it, but if you seeing this over time it may be the car entirely.

My unsolicited .02

So the dealer experience ended up with the mechanics lying about what they told me, them blaming the way I shift for it grinding and theres nothing they can do. Looks like I'll be calling GM customer service tomorrow.

This should be fun

For me for a long time on this car it was 3rd & don't we have a few threads on the 3rd... not sure if anyone really had a problem with 4th before Sweetie. Hummmmm....

Is it slipping and grinding OR just grinding into 4th?
