New Fuel Gauge Issue

I have read the threads regarding the fuel gauge reading incorrectly when "low fuel" even if you still have 1/8 of a tank (I had about 75 miles left when it happened to me). However, I am wondering if anyone has had the issue that you check the gauge and you have 5/8 of a tank, somehow a short while later you drop down to 1/2 a tank and then miraculously later you again have 5/8 of a tank.

Should I ask the dealer about this or is it just the "GM gauge" and I need to accept it for what it is?

I noticed my gas guage is finicky at best. My old pappy told me way back when that the best reading you'll get is right at start-up. Just to be safe, I never let it get to the point where it says low fuel so I don't have to worry.

A couple of weeks ago, mine went from half full to empty. We were starting out on a trip and were heading to the gas station anyway. It only took half a tank to fill it. It acted up all that weekend and then straightened out. I think it's the sending unit, but right now we're just watching it. I'll mention it at my next oil change even it keeps working ok.
