New pre-bulletin [Engine Tick/PS Belt]

Subject: Engine Tick Noise from Accessory Belt - keywords 2.4L click cold hot idle LE5 performance power steering squeak squeal #PIC4148 - (07/31/2006)

Models: 2007 Pontiac Solstice

2007 Saturn Sky

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
A customer may comment that they hear a tick noise coming from the engine when the car is first started after sitting overnight or for a few hours. If the vehicle was produced between the following VIN numbers, check the accessory belt.

Solstice:

7Y104195 - 7Y105363

Sky:

7Y104181 - 7Y105360

Recommendation/Instructions:
If the belt is a Hutchinson Belt P/N 12599657, replace the belt with a Dayco Belt P/N 24466975.

Note: There are some reported cases of the power steering belt causing a tick type noise on a cold engine. This belt noise condition is not related to the above condition or VIN numbers.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
