No More Clunk!

I posted this info in another thread a couple of days ago, but I'm so pumped about it that I thought I would start a new thread.

I've had my sky for over a year, and driven 23K miles. It has had the "clunk" from day one. I've always loved the car, but the clunk was annoying.

A few months back, it also developed a differential leak. Saturn replaced the seals at that time. Shortely after that, it developed a grinding noise when driving very slowly and turning. I've read that several people have had that. Saturn said that it was the diff fluid / additive, so they drained it and replaced the fluid. They did this twice. It was still making the grinding noise, so they finally replaced the entire Carrier Assembly / Rear Diff. It took a couple of weeks to get in the part, and I just picked it up 2 days ago.

Not only is the grinding noise gone, but there is also no clunk! The service manager said that the Carrier Assembly / Diff was an upgraded part.

It's probably psychological, but it even seems to drive better (if that's possible). Maybe it just seems that way to me since I'm not being disctracted by the clunking sound.

Do you think that could fix everybody's clunk, but they just don't want to spend the money to replace all of the diffs if nothing else is wrong with them?

I don't know, but it sounds promising. Glad it took care of yours. That clunk would be annoying as hell to me too. I will keep this post in mind in case my new one has this issue at some point.

keep us updated, too many people thought it was solved only to re-emerge 5000 miles later. I would be relieved to hear GM finally redesigned the part and fixed it permanently.

I just had the differental seal replaced last week and it has now developed the grinding noise when driving slow (in forward or reverse) and turning. Well back to Saturn we go! Thanks for the info. Titan Fan.

Maverick your going to have a whole new car before much longer, already a new engine and now I hope a new differential. Just the same old body of the car Keep me posted, one of these days we need to get together for a run Skybaby has an appointment next Tuesday for tire rotation if its not raining at the Saturn Dealer, plan on going to the car show across the street if Mother Nature does not ruin my plans again. Keep me posted on your baby's fix

have you had any more problems with the differential after they replaced it? Mine is in the shop (one week now) and still waiting for parts. Sounds like there might be hope if it did fix yours. Thanks.
