Redline Hitch?

I searched around for hitch solutions for my redline. The only thing I could find was the one offered from Curt, but it says it won't fit the redline.

Anyone know of a solution?

Looking for hitches on Skys is what brought me to this board. I was told by the first dealer that it was "impossible", that you would have to "cut the bumper" and it would "block the taillight".

After reading several threads here I realized they were wrong...a call to my local U-Haul confirmed that they will install one for under 200 bucks. Its a bit more work on the Red Line because of the dual exhaust but it can be done on that one too.

I ordered a combination cargo/camping trailer which should be shipping out next week.

Although I don't have the Redline, the install was easy. About 2 beers long...
I can see where it would be a little more difficult on the Redline. But doable...
This forum was very helpful when it came to installing the hitch.

I get my trailer in two weeks.

How much does this one cost? I didn't see a price on the curt site.

Also, does anyone know how much weight can be put on one of those steel/mesh cargo carriers if I were to use one of those with this hitch?

I am from Canada and the price is around $250. AutoAnything: $153.95 (save 35%)

I believe the tongue has 200lb weight rating.

I am told I need a converter with my trailer wireing total cost Hitch Wireing and labour $560 CND.

OK, I have ordered this one but am wondering now if it will work with the RPI GT exhaust? Has anyone else done this?

I own the first hitch built by Curt. It's a prototype and is installed on a Redline. Some things to know;
1) It is beautifully built. So are their production units.
2) It's very easy to install with hand tools. I have had mine off and back on. Very easy. NO mods needed.
3) I own the stock exhaust, MagnaFlow 3" dual outlet system, and 3" single pipe cat back race pipe from Solo Performance. All fit my hitch. I don't know about others.
4) Tell your dealership that this hitch is FOR A BICYCLE RACK. GM knows that Sol and Sky owners are towing and DO NOT LIKE IT. Tech letters have been issued to Pontiac and Saturn dealerships explaining that the Kappa is NOT rated for towing -- PERIOD.
5) I built up a ulility trailer from Harbor Freight to haul my race stuff. The body control module did not like the crappy tail lights, so I replaced them with high quality LED assemplies from a real trailer store. LED replacement bulbs did NOT work well.
6) I tapped into the stock wiring harness in the right rear fender for the pig tail. No issues. No modules needed.
7) When towing I have about 500 pounds behind me and at 70 mph I lose about 3-4 mpg. The car tows BEAUTIFULLY.

Wizer - DON'T do a U-Haul hitch. They don't have one for the Kappas and might try to weld something to the underbody.

Questions?

Questions?
I am a handy guy, but when it comes to cars and mechanical stuff, I don't do so great..so to tackle the job of putting on the hitch myself, and wiring it...requires some serious thought.

First of all, Uhaul said it's an easy thing to do. I suppose I could confirm that they aren't going to do any cutting or welding in order to install the thing..and if they arent, then let them do the job as planned.

If they come back with, "Hell yeah, we're going to slice and dice and weld and fuse" well then I see your point. We don't want any of that.

So if I am going to do it myself, I need more help.

I suppose I go to the Curt website, order myself a hitch..and it shows up a week or so later with all the required bolts..and I probalby just need a good socket set? The existing bolts will come right out with a good hard twist, and the hitch probably has replacement bolts that go right into the same holes? It's that easy?

When it comes to wiring the harness, how do I get to those wires in the rear fender, how do I know which ones to splice into, and is there a recommended wire connecter that is used for the job?

I suppose those are the main stumbling points for me.

Thanks in advance for the help.

U-Haul is to trailers is Meineke is to mufflers. TERRIBLE. Find a reputable (quality) hitch installer. Just about anywhere there are utility trailers there are good installers. Let THEM install the hitch. There are a couple tricks (dragging the bolts THROUGH chassis channels) that have to be accomplished. It sounds like this project may not be your cup of tea so let a pro do it. Having dealt with U-Haul in the past (never rented, but on a business level) this just NOT the place to have work done on your Sky.

Suggestion - call Curt and ask them if they know of any good installers in your area. BTW, what IS your area?

I have my Curt Hitch on order with my local Hitch Company. I will have them install it as well as do the wireing. I bought a small motorcycle cargo trailer that I will be fixing up over the winter. I will try to post some before and after pictures when I am done.

Please do. I would be interested in how well the car pulls it loaded. This is similar to what I want to do.

I live on Long Island.

I have used Hitchmaster in the past. I will give them a call and see if they understand that bit about dragging bolts through chassis channels and not welding anything on the undercarriage.

Thanks for the info. I really don't want to tackle the hitch myself, even if it seems like a really easy thing to do to most of you guys.

It's like taking down a wall in a house...I would do that in a second, but you might hesitate. We all have the things we're good at and those that are just not in our comfort zone.

Heck Wizer, take a drive to Georgia, help me pull a supporting wall and replace it with a pocket beam and I'll install the hitch for ya!!

I just did that exact thing in my condo. Put up a temporary wall, ripped out the existing wall, jacked up a doubled microlam, ripped out the temporary wall, sheetrocked the whole thing, a coat of matching paint that the seller left behind...and it's a done deal.

My Condo- Pictures and projects-may take some time to load!!!!

If you lived closer I would take you up on it.

Thanks for the link Darkwing. I am not sure about the free shipping "Order an additional $20.05 to qualify for free shipping" This was before I used the W4751 code.

Not worth if for me in Canada as shipping was almost $70 add Duties and Brokerage and I probably end up paying more.

Hope this helps my US friends better.
