Redline Intermittent Starting Problem

We have a 2007 Redline and have an intermittent start problem since last fall. Intermitently you turn the key to start and engine but the starter doesn't crank or click.

Vehicle has been to two Saturn dealers who have tried in order: Battery, Engine Control Module; Starter; Ignition switch. Each time we pick-up the car and they tell us it is fixed, but each time it faults within a day.

Once it starts you can keep restarting it 50 times. If you walk away for 2-5 minutes it will often fault again. When it doesn't start you have two options that seem to work. 1) Hold the key in the start postion for 4-6 seconds nd eventually it cranks. 2) turn the key to off and back to start on the 3-5 attempt it tends to start.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions on what might be going wrong?

Does it do this with both keys? If it always works with one key and intermittent with the other, then it's the key.

Have any of the dealers checked the PASS-Key III system?

Edit: What other items do you have on your keychain? Go solo with the key and see what happens.

Problem exists with both solo keys

Problem exists with both solo keys. Dealer hasn't mentioned that they checked the Passkey system specifically. How would they test? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I don't know how they test, but I would certainly hope their is a diagnositc process to determine if the communication loops is being closed. In fact, I would be very surprised if the system doesn't record failed attempts. If the systems is designed well, a PassKey III certified tech or locksmith should be able to extract that kind of information. If it identifies several failed starts, then you have your answer without needing to actually dupicate the problem.

Of course, I'm speculating it is designed with that diagnostic in mind. It's possible it doesn't record failed attempts and there is no way to find out without duplicating the problem.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I can tell you exactly what this is (i think) My solstice had the same problem. It is a loose connection on your BCM (passenger floor back panel) Open up the BCM cover when this happens again. You will see a large Red Plug with many wires running to it. Tap on it or wiggle it and while someone else starts the car. If I am right, the car will start right up. Several people have had this issue. Let us know how you make out.

Intermitent Start problem resolved

Saturn replaced the Engine control Module a second time and car has started well for over a week. The Dealer found a bulletin about a batch of bad Engine Control Modules 12605038 I hope this helps someone else.
