redline timing chain tensioner replacement

has anyone replaced theirs? i think mines going out due to the slapping noise i only get during cold startup. it quickly goes away after a couple of seconds and never comes back until the next cold startup.

just wondering what all is involved with replacing it. i have the manual that tells me how to do it and it doesnt seem that difficult but if anyone here has replaced theirs id like to know about it.

the only part that confuses me is reseting the tensioner once its installed. the book says to use a long metal bar and bump it to release it. what exactly is happening here?

any info is greatly appreciated. ill try to do a write up with pics when i replace it.

From the engine illustrated parts breakdown that I found on the internet, I see that there are two timing chains. One for the cams and one for the balance shafts. Does the balance shaft chain turn anything other than the balance shafts? If it doesn't then why not just leave the chain out? Wouldn't that achieve the same outcome as the neutral shafts?
