Thought I'd Add My Problem . . .

I haven't seen this issue so I thought I'd add it. My Sky RL is currently in the shop because the dash lights are out. Weird for a car that's only three months old, but I'm dealing and keeping my fingers crossed this isn't a sign of a larger issue. So while I wait for the repairs, I'm driving a new Aura loaner car, but when I open the sun roof, it just makes me miss my Sky!

You can do a rearch and might find a few threads about instrument panel lights. It seems some member's panel lights do light during the daytime if you rotate the dimmer switch over the 'hump'. While other's do not. According to the owner's manuel, they are not suppose to come on. The dealer and factory service tech's say some must have of had a defective dimmer switch. They replaced mine and it will not turn dash lights on now. Grrrrr!
Most all of us would like them to come on because it is hard to read the fuel gage during light driving. The best suggested method to turn them on during the daylight is to turn your fog lights on. The other method is turning on your head lights. Of course that causes the on coming traffic to be facing bright lights or think you are trying to warn them of pending police ahead!

Please keep us posted on your problem...Hopefully its a quick fix. I love the Aura too. We just bought an Aura and a SKY. I like the Aura XR gages better than the redline. Those white needles over the bright amber and carbon fiber look awesome. Does rolling the switch over the hump serve any purpose? I notice nothing when I do it. It would be nice to be able to make them light up when you want because they are set so deep. Oh well... No biggie.

Me too

My dash lights seem to have a mind of their own...no rhyme or reason why them come on (or don't).

The first time it happened I didn't have any lights on my dash or the radio. My first thought is FUSE . Stopped by the dealer at 8:55pm and the salesman showed me the thumb wheel that hides below the dash-apparently I hit it with my knee: We turned the wheel up and voile' on came all of the lights

Then I was driving at twilight with the top up and I couldn't see the gauges but the radio was readable. Again, went for the thumb wheel only to find it was completely on Made a quick call to one of the forum members who said that even though the wheel was on the interior dash lights are operated by the sensor on the dash and that the "sensor" thinks there's enought light Well, I wish the "sensor" was driving the car - because I couldn't see s*** and that makes me nervous.

When I took it into the dealer for a scheduled appointment I mentioned the dash light problem to the mechanic. Since it was working at the time he didn't have an explanation (and hadn't encountered the problem before).

I asked the service writer to make a note of it in my "electronic computer file". Whether or not he did is anyone's guess For now I am documenting the incident and will keep track to see if/when it happens again and the circumstances.

Keep us posted on how your problem is resolved...may need to take your solution/resolution to my Dealer to get it fixed!

Very interesting. i found myself thinking the same thing. I wish the sensor was mor sensitive. It gets fairly dark before my dash lights finally come on. Anyone know if there is a differnt sensor or an adjustment that can be made to these to increase the light level that will activate them?

Redneck trick to making the sensor come on sooner is to partially cover it. I suggest sticking a piece of electrical tape over half of it to start with and see if that makes it come on soon enough.

<edit> The real way to do it is to wire in a variable resistor (volume control). the sensor is just a photocell, the more light that falls on it the more current it allows to pass. Adding a resistor in line will allow you to reduce the amount of current as you wish.

Well, it works in practice... But will it work in theory?

Electrical tape doesn't work for the cruise control - you need duct tape for that!

Well, my particular problem was that the dask lights weren't even coming on at night, so I couldn't see how fast I was driving. A BIG problem, haha. Anyway, Saturn took a few days, but took the dash out and replaced the fuse. Everything seems fine now, and as an added bonus, the rattle in my dash is gone. Also, I have to say that Saturn really treated me well.
