Vin. Number meaning

Several years ago I remember seeing the breakdown of a vehicles vin. number and what each section or number in the sequence means. Does anyone else know that and could show it? Thanks, Puggs

Hummmm good question..... is there a certain reason why you are asking?

I have a connection in Auto Theft that if someone here doesn't answer specifically for our Sky's I can see if he knows in general for you. I have to speak to him later anyway today.

Very interesting. That's how the insurance companys know exactly what you have, simply by knowing the vin #.

Still a bit confusing. If the last six numbers were say 125234 does that mean your car is the 125,234 one made (not that many Sky's have been built) or does it mean your car is the 25,234 one, or the 234rd one made? I know in other low volume manufactured cars it's all six digits. So a low volume car might be 000234. If the large six digit number is correct then does it mean your Sky was the 125,234 car (of all types combined) built by GM at that moment or day?

Those last numbers are also known as 'Production Serial Sequence' numbers.
You used to be able to figure out what your production number was from them. But I do not think that applies any longer - or at least that is what I have heard.

Since the Sky is produced on the same platform and on the same production lines as the Pontiac Solstice, Opel GT, & Daewoo GX2 - this number may just be a reflection of how many vehicles have been produced on either that platform or production line.

My knowledge in this area comes more from restoring older cars - so I am not totally up on deciphering the newer VIN codes.
Hopefully, someone who works at GM with more knowledge will be able to answer this question adequately as to how those Production (or Sequence) digits work.

Wow, Sure got a lot of help there!... and thanks. I have read where folks talk about theirs and say things like "mine is an early production number 223" . I still am confused as well about the production number of mine. I do know from carfax that it was produced in 2006 and is a 2007 model, it is not rare but just wish I could know the correct number. It appears that the 2008 Vin card info is wrong. The 4th & 5th digits (car line) are as follows on the card:
MB - Sky base w/man
MC - Sky base w/auto
MG - Sky turbo w/auto
MF - Sky turbo w/man

Mine is 1G8 MF .... and car has auto!! Wonder is the base Sky codes are switched around too?!

One more time on the VINs. When the Sky first started the Vins were just Sky Vins and the Sols were just Sols Vins. They combined the two Vins at around 9000 on the Sky side with the vins on the Sol side. After that the Opel GT and the Daewoo were added to the Vins too. The last six numbers are your serial number on the cars. When referring to early numbers like, 101576, it means that this Vin, which is mine, was the 1576 Sky produced. As I said after 9000 it all was combined. Including R/L and GXP. ...Skip...You can go back in the archives in search mode and find out more....

The build date will help (tag in your drivers door well will give you the build date). If it is before the R/L option was offered then your SKYs last 6 numbers will be 1XXXXX The X's are the number of the car you have -- EG -- SUNNI1 last 6 are 103099. She was the 3099 one built.
Now all bets are off after the R/L option became available as the numbers have been combined.
