Whining Noise

I have a whine that sounds like it is coming from the rear of the car. The noise starts around 42 MPH and ceases as reach about 50 MPH. 08 RL automatic with around 9K. I have not noticed any problems with shifting. Does this sound like a wheel cylinder?

are you in full throttle?

if so, it might be your turbo spooling?

Probably some gear whine. Within that speed range, does it change depending on load? Like if you're cruising in that range and you either lift off the throttle or accelerate does the noise get louder or quieter? Can't be a wheel cylinder since the car has rear discs. It can't be a wheel bearing since those may a rumble sound at half wheel speed.

If the whine changes pitch or presence with load, you are probably looking at a pinion bearing preload crush sleeve that is improperly set. If the pinion is allowed to move, it changes both the gear backlash and the engagement pattern, which causes the whine.

Yes, I meant wheel bearing. The whine occurs during casual driving through the band of about 42ish to 50 mph and then subsides. As far as increasing or decreasing in loudness with acceleration and deceleration I will have to pay closer attention and evaluate.

I normally have the music up and had not noticed before, so I do not know if it is new or I have been missing it.

mine whistled... thought it was the rear deck adjustment being off and catching the wind

sounds odd.. but i think it was the stubby antennae I put onthe car previously... as soon as the antennae snapped off, the whistling stopped!

just a thought...

Some level of noise, especially if it comes and goes, can be considered normal. Obviously all noises are not normal, and some can be indications of problems, but the one you describe sounds like it is among the normal ones.
