Saturn Sky now Also a Daewoo G2X.

I just read on the web about GM having Daewoo come out with their version of the Sky. Its called the G2X, I dont know if its just me, but why is it that GM is giving out the Sky to other brands...I was also told by a friend that he saw something about a Saab version as well......

I am not in favor of this...but I just wanted to hear other peoples opinions on the subject. Thanks for your input.

Since I don't spend too much time in Korea, I really don't care how the car is marketed there. I do like that the factory in Delaware gets to build more cars, keeping people working and making the overall Kappa platform more profitable for GM.

BTW- There's been nothing from GM about a Saab variant, and I'd guess we would have heard something like that by now.

only 400

From what I've heard it's only 400 units of G2X (btw when we did the factory tour the tour guide said the the nickname of the Daewoo was Going To Xtreme- just a little trivia)

its all GM...but one way of looking at it.....is ...there is no "Saturn" brand outside the US...so if GM wants to sell this thing in ASIA, they need to use a existing brand....in this case Daewoo makes sense since its owned by GM.....same thinf for the Opel GT version of the sky in Europe....

Its the sames car....just different branding based on the geographical market.

Asian Sky: GM-Daewoo G2X Roadster Introduced in Korea
There is no Saab version on the drawing board. A bit of background... just about every GM division wanted to get their hands on this platform and most were more or less told "no." However, their campaigns led to a lot of specilation and rumor in the press about different divisions that would be getting one. Motortrend did a story on a Chevy Stingray. Saab versions were rumored. I have seen rumored Cadillac and Buick based kappas in the past too. None were in the works, but the magazines picked up on it and ran the rumors anyway. No biggie. It's nice to be in demand!

I like the fact they are throwing this car around the globe. The more places they can create demand for it, the more viable it will remain long term. The US market is fickle (well, every market is) and as time goes on, it gets increasingly difficult to sell a sports car such as this without a redesign. Therefore, you need to keep finding new demand to keep moving product in between product cycles. Even though only a few hundred will be headed to Asia, every little bit helps.

Cost

I think I would prefer if they made a few more style changes - but all in all - the more Kappa's produced total for all markets - the more cost effective it is for GM to manufacture, while keeping the total production number of any one variant down to a level where it will never become a run of the mill vehicle.

Works both ways.....
The newly released Saturn Astra ia made in Europe under the Opel badge. The Astra was quite profitable there, so GM decided to market it here. I will say the bag for the buck is pretty good.

As for the Saab variant, it was the opinion of some within GM that the second kappa should be a Saab. Bob Lutz chose Saturn. Decision was made in July 2003.

"And it was mid July when Bob Lutz decided to bring it out as a Saturn"
"Some felt, for instance, that the second kappa roadster should be a Saab rather than a Saturn".

I hope our cars eventually turn into the Vauxhall Lightning. That would be sweet. Except for that ugly talon grill.

You do know the Vauxhall Lightening was the concept car for the SKY.

I was not aware of this. All I can say is, the Sky could have been better. It's great now, but if the Vauxhall was the concept, then GM tried a tamer version than they should have gone for. The talon grille is still ugly though, but the current version is very nice. The rear lights would have been awesome in our production car.

For those who haven't seen the Vauxhall Lightning, here is the 2003 concept. This was the concept car from which the SKY was born:

Those are nice rear lamps, and in fact the lamps were closely modeled in the SKY early concept sketches. However, don't expect Saturn to change them back. The current tail lamps are specifically contoured as a Saturn style. Check out the lamp lines on their other Saturn models; they are very similar. The current lines are essential part of the Saturn brand, and the SKY is the flagship for that brand.
