Toyota FR-S Spec'd

From Road & Track, Aug 2011:

Quote:
200bHP @ 7200
150 lb-ft @ 4600
2 Liters
Est 0-60 in 7.5 (manual) almost 9 (auto)
Six speed, short throw manual
~3000 lbs.
Chassis: "Over engineered".
These stats are very telling. First, check out the low torque and limited powerband. HP comes from the revs, so driving this vehicle in performance mode will require lots of powerband management (remember the Mazda RX8 and the Honda S2000?). This is one reason the automatic option is anemic. It's hard to get good automatic performance out of a car designed to pounded in a narrow powerband. But the manual will be loved by drivers who like to manage the torque.

The chassis is "over engineered" (like the RX8). But unlike the Wankel constrained Mazda, the drive train on the FR-S seems ready made for performance boost from tunes and forced induction. This car might be 200HP out of the box, but I won't be surprised if it isn't pushing 300HP (and beyond) within a year or two of first sales. The first tuners and upgraders will have a nice sleeper car...vs stock ponies...or even a kappa or two.

And at an entry price of 20 to 25K, looking good for the target market.

7,200 RPM???? Sweet!

7.5 to 60 isn't stellar, but I have a feeling this is going to be an excellent AutoX car. Kind of like you said about the RX-8. I just think this one will be really reliable since it has the Toyota badge on it.

I bet it will go to 8000.
Bump the torque up another 50 with 8000 revs and voila....300HP!

Wouldn't surprise me any. I have a feeling a hi-power version would eventually be in the pipeline if this thing sells halfway decent (which it probably won't sadly).

I kind of hope the FR-S sells like poop and the Suba' version goes crazy.

The last time the local Toyota dealer had a vehicle that wouldn't sell, we got a "new" Tundra without the "new" price.

Be a part of the solution!

Original curb weight estimate was ~3000 lbs.

Actual is about 2730. That's a significant difference.

2730 is light but car needs another 100 ft lbs of torque and another 150 HP to be worth anything IMHO.

Toyota should have just named the FR-S "Celica" instead...as in the hayday of the Celica when it was RWD. It looks like it's good in stock form for 90% of the buyers, but the other 10% will squeeze out the extra 100hp or more with basic aftermarket mods (maybe TRD parts as well), just like they did with the Supra.

Here is a video: Excuse some of the things said about clutch being Hydralic(no electrical assist) and Torque stopping the car, he's new to Sporty car.

Went for a ride in my Buddies BRZ yesterday. Great car, smooth ride but I do wish it had more power.
