It all becomes an issue of whether there are enough people who will buy inexpensive reliable cars that get good mileage. Most Americans are convinced that Asian cars are better and more reliable (in the last 5 years, that is NO LONGER TRUE!), so Saturns never really had a chance. Let's face it, the Ion sucked design wise. I'm sure it was reliable, but it just didn't stand a chance against even the Cobalt or Focus much less the Civic or Corolla.
Most Americans LOVE their gas guzzling SUVs and luxury cars as indicated by sales. During $4 a gallon gas, we couldn't buy enough Prius'. When gas prices dropped back to $3 or less a gallon, SUV sales spiked again. Who wants to drive an ugly ass Prius when you can have a bad ass F150 SuperCrew!?
Saturn was in the process of moving upmarket to be the "Euro style" division in GM, but didn't get to make that complete transition when 2008 happened...
I have always loved the Saturn concept, but to be honest this is the first one we've owned. Too little too late.
Guess it makes our cars special...I hate driving something that everyone else has!
