Another Succesful Radiator Fan Controller Replacement

My Sky R/L radiator fan quit working, and I recently read about replacing the fan controller with one for the 2007 Ford Crown Vic for $22: RY1532 Fan Control Relay Module Fits Ford Crown Victoria Town Car Marquis | eBay

GM does not sell the controller as a separate item. They only sell the complete fan/motor/shroud/controller as a complete unit for something like $330!

The Ford replacement linked above is a direct fit, plug and play installation.

Since I didn't know if my problem was the controller or the motor, I took a chance on the controller and bought one from partsforcars29 on eBay whom I highly recommend! He shipped almost immediately from Cali by USPS on Friday afternoon and I had the part here in Dickinson, TX the following Monday! Although the installation of the controller consists of one Phillips head screw and 2 plugs, I took the car to a shop in case the fan motor was the problem because I could not do that.

I left the car at the shop yesterday afternoon and they called this morning at about 10 AM and said that the Ford controller fixed the problem! Such good news!

I would like to thank Tomato Soup for his assistance with this installation. Although I read many posts about the replacement, I was unable to find any threads that said that it actually worked. TS provided a link which led to 3 successful installations!

I'll report back to this thread in a month or so whether it is still working.

Thanks again, TS!

That's great news Yogi!

A few of us, including me, tried the replacement of this part but to no avail. Its good to hear about a couple of success stories to make this test worth while. I was not so lucky but came out of it with a positive experience in what it takes to switch out the fan shroud.

Yogi, thanks for the post and the link. You are one heck of a salesman. I just bought one and mine is working fine. I just love to have spare parts just in case.

I bought a water pump and thermostat before I bought my Redline. 10,000 miles later the pump is still in the box on the shelf. I will put the fan controller with it.

I would like to also confirm that replacing the fan control module with eBay one works. I replaced mine about 3 weeks ago and it works fine. I will update if it ever fails.

I will have to take a look at mine. We have some people including myself with an electronics background on here. How many wires come out of the controller going to the fan? With it being that cheap and simple I am wondering if it is a simple relay? How about a link to a few pictures on here of what we are dealing with. I hate ordering parts just to order them, I like to troubleshoot an issue.
Trying to understand if this is a simple 12 VDC fan that the controller is running. If it is we should be able to get a few pictures and explain how to test it.

3 input wires, 2 outputs. It's a PWM controller with some kind of embedded solid state transistor/mosfet devices to control the fan speed (someone pulled one apart, but it was resin-encapsulated, so couldn't tell exactly what devices were in there).

UPDATE: Found the post, but pics are now missing: http://www.solsticeforum.com/forum/f...9/#post1282649

Apparently there are IR F1404S FETs inside.

OK, that thread does tell you how to check the fan and module separately to see which half it is. No need to reinvent that wheel, couldn't see it at work.

Well, I may need to replace mine but mine isn't failing...it's hitting something. Something between the fan and the radiator is chewing up the fan blades. I can feel the blade damage. Praying the radiator didn't get bent somehow. I removed the bolts holding the fan in this morning and kind of separated the fan from the radiator a bit (still attached to the plastic duct work and had my Venom brace in) to see if something was stuck in there and would fall out...no luck there. So I'll be ripping into this sometime soon.

Good to know yours is still going strong Yogi.
