I don't see anything in the rules regarding helmets or passengers. Speed limit is 55, how tough can it be? Oh, and you are getting 3 laps behind a pace vehicle. No passing.
Drive The Glen - Watkins Glen International
Oh yeah, $30 per car. I wonder if that includes the picture on lap 3 at the start/finish line.
Personally, I think I'll pass on this opportunity.
When we were in NY several years ago we "Drove the Glen" and enjoyed the experience - mostly. Is it worth $30? That is for you to decide. I plan to do it again.
Passengers are welcome, and helmets are not required. The day we drove it we were in the company of Suburbans, sedans, and a diesel F250.
The format for the activity is to follow a pace car for two laps, stop at the Start/Finish Line for you to take your own pictures, then follow the pace car for a third lap.
While it isn't a high-speed event it isn't boring. Even 55 MPH feels quick in some of the turns, if not on the straights, and it is a unique opportunity. Think of it more as "fun" rather than "exciting".
I believe that the NASSAM organizers have arranged groups that are exclusively Kappas, but cannot confirm this.
They may have arranged for a photographer, but if there was information about that I missed it.
I say that we "mostly" enjoyed our drive because the first two laps we were behind a very slow Suburban, and only got any speed when we could hang back and do a little sprint. I arranged with the pace car driver for us to follow him directly for the third lap and he gave us a much faster run. It is too bad that the format wasn't 1 lap then 2. Fortunately, Kappa-only runs will avoid the Suburbans. There was also some discussion about ordering the cars RL/GXP first with the NAs following, but that seems like a waste of time to me.
People have talked about hanging back from the pace car so that they can do some high-speed sprints, but they should remember that the track is live while this is going on and corner workers will report such activity if they think it is excessive. The track does not refund your money if they kick you off for being unsafe.
