Jacksonville Roadsters April Run
April showers bring spring flowers and a Jacksonville Roadsters Club run to the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse and Museum at Ponce Inlet Saturday, April 30. At 175 feet, the lighthouse is the tallest in Florida and one of the tallest in the country. The current structure located on the north side of the inlet was completed in 1887. The Light Station was functional up until 1970 when the Coast Guard abandoned it to establish a new light at the Coast Guard Station on the south side of the inlet. In 1972, the property was deeded to the Town of Ponce Inlet and the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association was founded. In the same year, the Light Station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of only a few 19th Century Light Stations to have all its original buildings still intact. The lighthouse and three keepers’ dwellings have been restored and open to the public. The cost is $6.95 per person. Price includes tour of the buildings and lighthouse, a video theater of the Light Station history and a gift shop. Lunch is planned at the Hidden Treasure Rum Bar and Grill at 11:00am across the street from the Light Station. We will meet at 10:00 am in the BJ’s Wholesale Club parking lot located at 1800 Dunlawton Avenue, Port Orange. We will depart BJ’s parking lot promptly at 10:15 am. For those coming on Interstate 95, get off at Exit 256 (FL-241), going East for a short distance, you will see a Golden Corral, CVS Pharmacy and Moe’s Southwest Grill on your right. The entrance to BJ’s is next to Moe’s, make a right into the wholesale club’s parking lot. The Kappas will be waiting. Please RSVP Maria Moore by Thursday, April 28.
