Jacksonville Roadsters February Event

The February Jacksonville Roadsters Club takes you to Bok Tower Botanical Gardens and Carillon near Lake Wales in Central Florida. Mark it on your calendar for February 22, 2014. The gardens are beautiful and something is in bloom all year. Additionally, we will hear the live playing of the “Singing Tower” carillon and be privy to watching the playing on closed circuit TV at 1:00PM. The tower is 205 feet tall and there are 60 bells weighing anywhere from 16 pounds to nearly 12 tons. The botanical gardens preserve is composed of 250 acres and contains hiking trails, beautiful Pinewood Estates home, the Singing Tower and of course, the lovely gardens. The tower is built on what is known as Iron Mountain (one of the highest points on the Florida peninsular). The preserve is a National Historic Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The gardens began in 1921 by Dutch immigrant Edward Bok and his wife Mary Louise Curtis Bok. Mr. Bok was editor of Ladies Home Journal and Mrs. Bok founded the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. The Pinewood Estates is a 20-room Mediterranean Revival mansion built in 1930 to 1932 by C. Austin Buck, a Vice President of Bethlehem Steel Company in Pennsylvania. The gardens are a wonderful place to get away from the noise and hustle of modern day Florida. Join the Jacksonville Roadsters Club for a tour of Bok Tower Botanical Gardens. We will have lunch pay as you go at the gardens’ Blue Palmetto Café. The café serves a variety of hot and cold sandwiches and other culinary favorites. The café is located in the Visitors and Gift Shop Center.
Admission price is $12.00 for the gardens and $18.00 for the gardens and Pinewood Estates. For additional information go to the website: Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, FL | A Piece of Florida History near Tampa and Orlando The staging area for this event is the Bob Evans Restaurant parking lot located at 43700 Highway 27, Davenport, FL. Take US 27 South at I-4 Exit 55. Restaurant is on the right just south of the interchange. Please be there by 10:45AM. We will depart the Bob Evans parking lot at 11:00AM. Please RSVP Gene and Karen Smith by Thursday, February 20,2014 at [email protected] or (386) 445-5346.
