North Carolina High Country Cruise On Tour [HCCOT] (Aug 23/24 2013)

With VA Sky's blessing, some of us HCC regulars are cooking up something special to keep the HCC going this year. Due to fact that hotel costs are being quoted to us at double rate for Labor Day weekend, we are looking to push it up a week to keep it reasonable. So, we are thinking August 23/24 for the main routes (Friday/Saturday) in order to leave Sunday for return travel. A lunch run on Thursday is also possible if we get enough early arrivals.

Oh yea, it's a change in Venue as well...about 2 hours west of the normal HCC stomping ground, and it will be anchored in Bryson City, NC.

If you've been to any events "near" Fontana Dam in the past, you might already have an idea of the roads that will be in the mix! However, a short section of the BR Parkway, NC 28 and NC 215 will provide for plenty excitement as the signature route on Friday.

So, don't make other plans for that weekend yet, you can't miss this one!

Details to follow as they solidify.

Lodging information for the High Country Cruise On Tour (HCCOT) August 23 - 24, 2013.

Hotel:
Sleep Inn Bryson City
500 Veterans Blvd, Bryson City
North Carolina, 28713
Phone: (828) 488-0326

web: sleepinnbrysoncitync.com

Group to register as: Kappas on Tour
Primary Rooms Blocked Dates: Friday, Aug 23nd and Saturday, August 24th, 2013
Optional Date: Thursday, Aug 22nd

Checkin time after 2:00PM
Checkout by 11:00AM

Andy Bhakta, the General Manager of the Bryson City Sleep Inn, has blocked out rooms (both single/king and double/queen) for our group. The negotiated rate covering the TWO primary nights stay (Friday / Saturday) including taxes, is $221.48 for the single and $239.20 for the double.

When you call, let them know you are with the “Kappas on Tour” group. If you are planning on coming in a day or two early, please make sure you mention that and they will work to get you in one of the blocked rooms. If you want to come in on Thursday, the rate for that night is lower at $69.00 + tax (figure that to be about $12.00).

This hotel is relatively new, is very clean, has ample parking and has an outdoor pool. Free Breakfast Bar and WiFi are included with the room. We can use the breakfast room after 10:00am as a gathering room. Mr. Bhakta will also have two car wash stations for our use!

The Sleep Inn is located only a few blocks away from the downtown area of Bryson City, so shops and local restaurants are located within walking distance of the hotel. There are also several fast-food restaurants in the same area as the hotel. The town of Bryson City has free WiFi access covering the whole downtown area.

Preliminary HCCOT Route Information

There are two planned routes for this event. They are being designed right now, and will be posted here when ready. Garmin GPX route files will be available at that time.

We will be leaving the hotel at 9am sharp each day, in order to give us ample time to run our routes.

The Two-State Route: (Tenatively Friday's run)
This route will be more of a cruising run, though well worth the trip. It will basically take us to Robinsville where we will pick up the Cherohalla Skyway and run it all the way to the end in Telico Plains, TN. We will grab a lunch there and then simply run the route backwards to return. Depending on the time we arrive back at the east end of the Skyway, we may pause and take a vote to see if, as a group, we want to make a run up and back through the Tail of the Dragon. If we do that, it won't be a cruising route anymore

Deals Gap is about 40 miles from our hotel in Bryson City if you would like to venture back to the Tail on your own.

The Tri-State Route: (Tenatively Saturday's run)
This route will be the longer of the two and will likely cover THREE STATES! It's planned to run southward down to Franklin, NC, via the infamous Hwy 28, and continue down to Highlands and then pass into Georgia for a bit, and turn back north via a slice of South Carolina and pick up the technical climbing section of NC 215, then hop on a short section of the Blue Ridge Parkway as part of the return path. I will be running it end-to-end soon so I can see how it works out for stops and food. Depending on how long it actually takes to run this route, I may change this route to be shorter, but I really want to keep it intact! Mr. Garmin is estimating 185 miles and 4:45 hours/mins without stops.

Thursday Lunch Run (Optional)
If we have enough early arrivals interested in a warmup run, we can sample Hwy 28 down to Franklin for a very nice lunch at Cafe Rel. We will gather at the Sleep Inn and leave for Franklin at 11:45am ish. Or meet us in Franklin at 12:30pm at Caffe Ral.

Note: The NC DOT has listed an active construction site on the Hwy 28 bridge crossing over the Fontana spillway (below Fontana Dam). This is the bridge that is about 2 miles away from Fontana Village, and may become a pain for us trying to go between Bryson City and Deals Gap (Tail of the Dragon) An alternate bypass will need to be considered before committing to running the Dragon. The NC DOT has indicated the bridge will be open with one-lane traffic during the daytime and closed completely at night.

Thanks to that feller over on the Solstice Forum for putting together the above information. Yours truly is not nearly as talented.

We're counting down the days, and while August 22 seems a might fer piece (far off), July 22nd is just around the corner. Why should you care? Well, before July 22nd, you can book your weekend room for $99.00 - $110.00/night plus tax. If you come in Wednesday or Thursday, the rate will be $69.00/night plus tax.

If you wait until after July 22nd the rates are;

$89.99 - $99.99/weeknight
$129.99 - $139.99/weekend

Why wait, when you can save. We only have so many blocked rooms, so reserve now to get this great deal!

Sleep Inn rates have been extended! This Event is only 3 weeks away

Seems we do have a slow weekend picked for Aug 23 /24, so the manager of the Sleep Inn has agreed to allow us to continue booking at the negotiated lower rate. We only have a handful of folks registered at the Sleep Inn, so plenty of rooms left. See the top of this thread for information.

KD4Z and I have completed end-to-end runs of the routes for both days, and think we have winners on both.

We did run across an unexpected detour on NC 215, however the detour itself is just as entertaining, so we figure if it's still detoured, no problem, else we will take the normal route.

We don't expect the bridge construction near Fontana to be an issue. Same deal, if it's closed, the signs will tell us to take the detour around the back entrance to Fontana Village, and thus around the bridge.

Depending on the number of cars, we may be able to stop at Dry Falls on friday (the parking lot is limited to abt 30 cars total). If we can fit, we will stop. We checked it out and since they have had so much rain, the falls are no where near dry! Pretty awesome walking underneath the actual falling water.

For those of you that make it in town early on Thursday, Aug 21, we will be meeting at the Sleep Inn around 11ish and by 11:30, will be forming up for a warm up pass down the very twisty Hwy 28 to Franklin, NC and have lunch at Caffe' Ral. Be sure to have some of that green stuff (Cash) as they don't take credit cards! There is an ATM next door in the "Hot Spot" gas station.

We will return back the same route again. There is something about 18 miles of 2nd and 3rd gear left-right-left-right turns on a road with a 55 MPH speed limit! So, the limit will only be locals on tractors and our stomach's. I'll then drag us around through town and loop through the Great Smoky Mtn Nat. Park so you can find your way back for Tubing at Deep Creek Campground

Then, we will take a short hop out the Road To Nowhere and back. Thursday night, we most likely will be eating at Jimmy Mac's Restaurant/on Main street in Bryson--about 2 blocks from the hotel.

The lunch stop on Friday is in Telico Plains TN. It's a small place called "The Crab Trap". It offers both seafood and BBQ. The seafood is prepared in an outside kitchen and looked pretty awesome. The proprietor is from an area on the gulf coast of Florida (Ozello, near Crystal River --I actually used to eat at her old restaurant years ago) and has fresh seafood shipped in daily from her old Fla connections. The BBQ is "inside" and provides a decent A/C controlled dining area. Order outside for seafood, inside for BBQ.

Friday night's meal will be around 7pm at a well established, locally owned Italian restaurant in Bryson City called Pasqualino's

The lunch stop on Saturday places us in a "po-dunk" area (Wahalla SC), so we will only have a choice of Arby's and a Hardee's, maybe one more fast-food joint. So pack a bag-lunch if you have special needs.

That is followed by about 7 miles of what I'll call "transit zone" however, the rest of the 180 mile route is basically constant turns.

On Saturday evening, we will be invading a Mexican restaurant, also in Bryson City.

So, hope to see everyone in Bryson City in a few weeks
