Just did my tips the other day. After winter clean up. Round #1 . Outside not too bad. Rinse. Wipe. Alum. cleaner, old toothbrush, scrub. Soot or carbon build up, might take a scrap to pad buff. I use both. Straight edge razor a painters one, liquid cleaner, buff with pad. 90-95%. Your results will vary. How much time. How much soot. How hot? How many beers? You get the picture. Inside the pipe is an on going thing. Clean and scrub with alum. cleaner. Rinse. Wipe. Then after dry, wipe a good layer of Never Dull on the inside. Leave on. Overnight is better. Turns white. Light scrub with toothbrush or veg. one, little round job. Dollar store, for use and abuse, and throw it away, buy another. Rinse and wipe. Gone. 95%. Do that 3-4 times in a row, almost no carbon build up on your pipes anywhere. Inside or out. Works for me. Now on to Round # 2 Clean and care. Good polish. Keep road grime to a minimum. 3 times a year. Wash with wax concentrate built in, will take care of the day to day slime. Most of the time, my whole car gets a good wipe down, before I go. Sometimes you just don't have that kinda time in your busy day to do that. When you do clean your ride. You give it the real deal once over. The tips are part of that. Every time you clean it. Little bit now, goes a long way, with the soot and grime from the road.

For what its worth I used a soap infused Brillo pad to cut thru the worse of it then dried them and used basic oven cleaner. Let it sit for an hour. They were black when I had the Red Line exhaust installed. They are now spic and span. So every now and then, oven cleaner and BINGO.
