One week without driving : shut down

I bought my opel GT on the 2nd of April.

The battery discharged after one week not driving!

Starting with a booster, battery and alternator control (it's OK) with a multimeter by roadside assistance: The battery will charge when you drive BUT it's likely that the electric of the car will shut down because "use" electricity somewhere.

I drove the GT to the garage after: New battery.. !!!

And after a 300 km trip, it happened again! No driving.. I'm sure all was turned off, radio, lights....

Has this ever happened to anyone of you before?

Any ideas?

Just one thing, I saw a small red cable under the driver's sliding seat' (right side) was cut.....
The cable is located on the right seat and slides on the bracket.

Thanks for helping

That sounds like a non-charging electrical system...like your alternator/regulator is out and the battery isn't getting charged as you drive.

As for the small red cable, a picture of it would help though if it's red, and not grounding out, it shouldn't drain the battery since it would need to be connected to something to draw power from the battery (car is negative ground and all "hot" wires are positive...usually marked so by using a red, pink, or orange wire).

The only connection I could think of where that loose red wire would somehow be connected to your issue is if it was part of the charging circuit and the system wasn't charging because it wasn't connected but due to where you describe finding it I doubt that's the case.

To verify what roadside assistance told you, if you can get a good battery in there that's charged, I'd hook it up and text the voltage of it with the car off. Then start the car and see what the voltage is with the car running. At rest voltage should be between 12 and 13 volts...usually 12.5 or higher. Running the voltage should be over 14 volts. I'm not completely sure on the accuracy of the numbers but I know at rest the battery should be above 12 volts and when running with the alternator charging like it should the voltage is about as volt or two higher than at rest at least.

@JohnWR or @TomatoSoup are our resident electrical gurus, maybe they may have some insight.

Thanks Robotech

The roadside assistance did the test like you said the first time, battery and alternator was ok.

He told me that the car consumed power even when it is switched off.

The garage changed the battery and didn't check this problem certainly.

The car will consume some power while it is off, but you should not have a problem after only one week. Mine will routinely sit for three weeks without a problem.
I am curious about the red cable, can you post a picture of it? The wires that I can think of in that area are for:
*The seat raiser. Does the seat go up and down when you operate the switch?
*The seat belt. You do not mention it so I assume the seat belt warning is on when the belt is loose and off when it is fastened.

The previous owner may have added an accessory that is draining power. Do you know of anything in the car that is not original equipment?
Another useful picture would be of the Body Control Module that is under the carpet at the very front of the passenger floor.

Do you have an aftermarket stereo system? Some of the adapters have been known to fail, not shutting off and draining the battery. Might be something to look at.

When I tryed to open the door with the key remote no effect but the little lights orange just blink randomly and fast as if a computer is rebooting and ...nothing

I tryed to charge yesterday, no led check ON on chargeur , just a clicking sound regular of the chargeur...without effect.

All the car in original standart just only filter K&N changed
New battery since 9 may.
Last trip 2 June.
And bad surprise yesterday 11.

The seat raiser, honnestly seat was on good place...I never tryed.
The seat belt : Orange color when seating, belt fixed no light and sound.

And, I do not remember the usual sound of alert or control, I still discover the car, like now but in the bad way.

For the picture, I will do it.
07.45 AM, I have to go to work.

What a surprise !

I didn't see like this.

It can be the source of my problem ?

From your description and now with the photo of the red wire under the seat, this could be... your problem right here.
Two bare wires, grounding against the bolt on the seat base maybe? This needs to be addressed first imo.
IF... this is for the seat height adjustment switch under the drivers seat, or it might be something else?
Something the previous owner has patched into?

IF these wires are under the passenger seat, could be the amp for the sound system or the previous owner might
have tapped into this hot lead, for something else unknown to you when you purchased the car?
Trace these wires if you can, to see where the go to? Might give us a clue to what
other problems might be involved here for you to look for?

New battery installed, alternator is ok, runs and charges ok while driving, but when sitting still it drains your battery, grounding problem?
I would check other grounding points for any corrosion within the car. Check the fuses in both locations just in case something in there is blown?

Not charging when sitting still is the big question here? Robo & JohnWR & TomatoSoup are the guys to go to when you have electrical problems here on the forum. IF these wires are the problem, and you fix those, and then it still does it again, it is a process of elimination here.
Electrical gremlins are sometimes hard to find in any car.

Fix these two wires first, then see if your battery goes dead again? Get back to us with your results and hopefully
our guys can narrow down what or where else for you to look for a drain to your electric system.

Luck with it.

That is very likely your problem. That is the seat adjuster circuit, and it is protected by a self-resetting circuit breaker. That breaker is in the underhood fuse block, the silver device in the middle on the far right side. I believe it is number 37 on the legend. Pull it out first, charge the battery, and see what happens.

I pull out the silver device number 37.

I disconnected the battery, put out the device 37.

Protected the wires.
I charged the battery, before I put the negativ

Before charging 2.56 Volts...after 12.14 V

Tomorrow, I will connect the battery and will see.

The seat must be removed to repair.

We'll see.

Thanks all.

First welcome to the form, now to your no charge problem some of the newer battery chargers won't charge a battery if it is completely dead. The battery is new so try to disconnect it overnight it may recover enough to be able to be charged if not find someone you know who has an older charger and try on 2amps overnight.JWR and Lac made suggestions on how to fix your problem,Good luck.

Feedback

- Yesterday evening : battery 12,14 V

- This evening 11,80 V (??)

- After driving 45 min 12,4 V

What a pleasure to heard this engine starting...and drive.

This car is fabulous.

What is the voltage while running? I would expect approximately 14 V.
