While I can't go into details at this time, I have been informed that the NHTSA has gotten wind of this report and would be open to starting an investigation into the problem. I first must draft a Defect Petition in accordance with 49 CFR 552.4 in order to get the ball rolling. I am currently researching what is needed in that Defect Petition letter and starting my first draft. I have a contact at NHTSA who is willing to help with this process so I look forward to having more news for you folks in the coming days.

I've updated the front page of this thread (originally wrote report...have report on the brain) for archive purposes (so future visitors don't HAVE to read through the whole thing to find this info) but will keep updating you folks as news comes in when possible.

This wouldn't have happened without the help of another forum member here who I cannot publicly mention. So _________, I thank you.

Sly Bob, thank you but really there have been a lot of people involved in this. TS ripped apart the mat and documented with photos where and why our mats were failing. DaveOC provided production and sales numbers for the Kappa in order to do the analysis. Other folks on here spread the word and eventually got me a contact and procedure to progress with this with the NHTSA. Yet others took additional photos of failed mats and let's not forget all those folks who submitted complaints to the NHTSA. It took all those people to make this happen and without them, this would go nowhere. I was just the schmuck who put it all together and wrote a paper on it. LOL

Speaking of writing a letter, the first step to proceed was to write a Defect Petition. I drafted one up, submitted it to the contact I was put in touch with at the NHTSA for review, and already have it approved. This is what is going out along with a CD with all the listed attachments.

http://b17queenofthesky.com/Sky/resr...ion_redact.pdf
Note, after creating this redacted version of the letter, I found some typos and other grammatical and structural mistakes that I corrected. I just don't want to go through the hassle of redoing that final version in a redacted form like this.

Next step is to mail it and email it to my contact...then wait. They review it and if they feel the petition has merrit, they open an investigation

Robo, we all know how good your writing is and how well you explain yourself. Schmuck or not, you are probably the only one in my mind that could have a shot at getting this ball rolling. GREAT JOB!, no matter how it turns out. Thanks so much for your efforts.

I wonder if it's made by the same company or if the defect is similar?

WOW. I will look into this but the model years are definitely later production vehicles. 2013-2017.

The NHTSA campaign number is 16V244000.

Their investigation number is EA150004.

Quote:
In April 2014, Nissan North America launched Safety Recall 14V-138 to address problems with the Occupant Classification System (OCS) algorithm in the following vehicles: model year (MY) 2013-2014 Nissan Altima, Pathfinder, Sentra and LEAF; MY 2013 Infiniti JX35; MY 2014 Infiniti QX60 and Q50; and MY 2013 Nissan NV 200/Taxi vehicles. According to Nissan, the OCS may misclassify adult front passenger occupants and turn off the passenger's frontal air bag for an adult occupant of sufficient weight.

In March 2015, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Recall Query (RQ15-001) after the agency received approximately 124 complaints alleging problems with the OCS after the recall repairs and/or other OCS related repairs were made by Nissan/Infiniti dealers.

The majority of the complaints alleged the passenger air bag status light stays on (i.e., indicating passenger air bag is turned off) for adult front passengers of sufficient weight. Many of the complaints stated the dealers have made multiple repairs but the problem still persists. In its June 2015 response to ODI's information request under the Recall Query, Nissan provided approximately 1,121 complaints and field reports on the recalled vehicles. These reports alleged OCS issues similar to the NHTSA reports described above.

At this time, NHTSA has received a total of approximately 208 complaints (note: total of 1,271 reports shown in the table above eliminates 58 duplicative reports received by ODI and manufacturer). An Engineering Analysis has been opened to conduct a comparative assessment and further evaluate the effectiveness of the recall remedy which will include a thorough review of the countermeasures taken by Nissan and its suppliers.
Now that I have read the reports on this, the situation here is different. In the Nissan vehicles, it is a problem with the logic in the ECM determining if the seat is occupied or not. Who makes Nissan's system is immaterial since the issue is very different from the problem we have.

The good news is that it shows the NHTSA is serious about malfunctions in the passenger presence system. This particular recall comes after a NHTSA investigation. This reinforces my belief that if what we have done so far results in a NHTSA investigation that there will be a recall on our sensor mat.
