Kia Asking Saturn Dealers To Consider Selling Korean Cars

While GM has reached a deal with Penske to sell off its Saturn brand, the future for dealers is anything but certain and Korean automaker Kia is hoping to capitalize on that.

Kia dealerships are often in either rural areas or less popular urban areas because land in high-traffic and densely populated urban areas is just too expensive. With both GM and Chrysler eliminating dealerships in urban areas, Kia intends to take advantage of this opportunity and make a big push. And with many well-appointed and nicely designed Saturn dealers conveniently located in those higher traffic areas, Kia hopes to convince Saturn retailers into switching to the Kia line.

In an interview with Automotive News, Kia executives said that the fact the Saturn dealerships are new and ideally-located is important, but the main factor is their availability.

Kia is targeting Saturn dealers in three main ways. First, it is looking to buy Saturn dealerships that are closing or closed and convert them to Kia dealerships. Second, it is seeing if any operational Saturn dealerships are interested in switching to Kia. And third, Kia is seeing if Saturn dealers who arenít interested in the first two are interested in opening up a separate Kia franchise.

Whats a KIA?

No Way is right!
I have a co worker who has a KIA, he told me what a pile of do do this car is. He has had this car in so many times for service, he has threaten to invoke the lemon law on the dealer. They kept working with him to correct the problems, but he said never again will he buy from KIA. I would think as KIA produces more and more cars, they will eventually get it right and correct all the problems, which in turn will bring up the price anyway.

I hope Mr.Penske keeps the Saturn brand alive. Take it where GM has drop the ball. If you have no vision for the future than you have been blinded by the past.

If Penske Group was even remotely considering selling Kias badged as Saturns, this move burned that bridge. Penske's only involvement in this development will be their response to the Saturn dealers; they'll need to motivate them to stick with the Saturn brand.

I guess I don't have to worry about them trying to seduce my dealer since there's a Kia dealer right across the street. Whew!

As for Kia's quality, it's not so bad these days. Hyundai owns a huge stake in them (though not the majority interest they held years ago), and they share a lot of resources.

If you must go Korean Hyundai is better. I rent a lot of cars and get what is cheapest. Have had both many times and the KIAs are junk. Hyundais are really not too bad. I was surprised the first time I had one. If I just wanted a cheap car thats good on gas I would buy one. Of course I dont want that. I will keep my Sky and pick up. I wont ever buy government motors again as I dont want this government take over to work. Michelle's going to replace the Malibu with a Ford. Most likely a Mustang. Too bad as we have bought 11 new GM products since 1994. We have been a GM only family since then Before that I had Ford trucks and GM cars.

I guess the Saturn dealer must have been drunk when he signed the dealership agreement with KIA. The Koreans tricked him.

Well if you are looking to buy a brand spanking new 4 door car 30 miles or less on the engine out the dealer for 10K this is your buy. It might not last long but a brand new car for 10K, that is pretty awesome i think to get the feeling of owning a brand new car (its probably not gonna last long, lol) Heck when the koreans shoot at us, nobody will want to buy a korean car, BRAND NEW KIA FOR 5K OBO!!!!!! any one?

Saturn Dealer by me in NW New Jersey (3 saturn locations + subaru) asked GM back in the fall of 08, before the stuff really hit the fan, if he could start at one of his locations and deal KIAs along with Saturns. GM said no way, he took them to court and they ruled in his favor with the agreement that if the new owner of Saturn, unknown at that time, did not want him to deal KIA's along side Saturns he would have to get rid of KIA at that time.

F U Kia!

This is so embarrassing as to what has become of the US Car Industry when a company like Kia wants to swoop in. I wish Korea was as open to American products as we are to Korean.
