Rear brake piston

So I have replaced many screw in pistons systems before....but this one?! I can’t seem to get it to screw back in! It just spins!
I have even gone as far as removing the whole brake system to get better pressure while spinning...clockwise. Can’t get it to move...it just spins. Any suggestions?

Hi Benzit69. I have the same issue with my 08 Sky base. Tried to turn it in (with needle nose pliers cause I'm 'thrifty' ) to adjust the emerg brake and had no difference -just spins. Put away for the winter -going to try again in a week or two. There's a thread here somewhere on this and it seems to say "buy the tool" to compress and turn the piston 'cause it needs more pressure to engage and maybe it has come off the end of the threaded post that the piston rides on. One guy said that the tool did the job, another guy said he put on new pads and that fixed it. Try Googling the issue -it will probably take you to the right thread. Cheers, Jim

Use a proper brake tool. It needs to be screwed back in while being compressed. Clockwise for with sides (write me at SSOOO) if you need more.

Morning SSR. Thanks for your reply. That's what I was afraid of. That tool on Amazon is ~$30 cdn for a one-off use, and I don't think Napa rents it so I'll have to find one to borrow (my neighbour is a car guy but I don't like to borrow tools). So the "push harder with needle nose" won't do it then? Probably need new pads while I'm in there I guess. The costs add up. I'll write if I still can't get it right.

As others have said, yours has probably come off the threads - which means your pads are worn enough that, yes, you need new pads too.

If you have a Harbor Freight near you, they have the brake adjust kits too, a lot cheaper. Plus, you can easily get 20% off coupons in the magazines/papers, or even online, for them.

Yes, you definitely need the tool. I have used a c-clamp, but it is a pain, and a little risky, you can damage the caliper pretty easily.

Our local AutoZone stores will "rent" the tool for free. You essentially buy it, then take it back for a refund.

When I did mine last I was able to use a pneumatic brake caliper tool--made short work of the job. As mentioned above, I don't think it's possible to do it without the tool.

$30 Canadian isn't bad for the tool if it's like the one I paid $50 for at Harbor Freight. I have used it on a number of cars and if you're going to continue to do your own maintenance, you'll use it plenty.

Of course the irony is now 2 of my 3 vehicles have multiple caliper pistons where that tool won't push them back in. LOL I now have to get a different type of tool to use on them.
