I think the GMPP kit will be fine for me but if you are planning anything more radical such as engine mods to the cams, lifters, heads, pistons, crank, flywheel, etc - especially for track use then you might want to look at other tuners.

Some folks have had dyno checks done as well as part of the tuning process that is likely the only way to be sure you've got the best possible tune for your car and your mods.

There are many posts regarding various tunes. I have the GMPP kit, not installed yet, and now they have plug and play wiring instead of crimp or solder wiring that came with my kit.

A primary reason to tune is you can remove the learn down function, from the factory the computer constantly adjusting to hit preloaded parameters, if you add any mods - CAI, cat-less, BOV, exhaust, etc - the computer will "compensate" for those changes so those mods may end up making no real difference.

The GMPP mod is from GM and will not void your warranty and while it does add no-lift shift (form manual trans) and bump the red-line fuel cut off a few hundred RPM and removes the learn down function as well as remapping the boost profile (and adds code to support the new air flow sensors that are part of the kit) it is not as tune-able as the third party options out there.
