Robotech | Man, I've been out of the loop over this weekend (finishing up a big brake install on the GF's Veloster) and it certainly doesn't look like it was slow while I was away. LOL |

Oh you need to see Bob's layout. It's not done but still just amazing!! You DID go off the deep end. When you have guys that have been doing this for years tell you that your first setup is nicer than any they've ever seen, that's a clue you jumped in with both feet first! LOL Hey, I'm the same way with stuff so this is by no means a negative thing...LOL I think San Diego has gone quiet because Myrna and Eric are planning their wedding and no one else down there EVER plans anything. Myrna asked me to do a run in June and I just won't have the car done by then for it. Plan and simple. I hope to get that Whitney/Death Valley run together but I still haven't heard back from the parks service about driving up to their parking lot. Apparently you need a pass or something for that and I'm trying to get details...that along with working on cars, doing shows, running autocross...life has been a little hectic this year. Age has a definite role in all this. The Sky forum, and the car itself, always seemed to attract an older crowd that was far more into the social aspect of owning a special vehicle like this one. The Pontiac club, and car, attracted a younger audience and those who were more into the performance and modification aspect of these cars than they were the social aspect. The Sky folks appreciate the performance, but enjoy the social part more...while the Solstice folks enjoy the social aspects that come with going to events and races with modified cars. I don't know if it has something to do with the brands or what, but there is a very big difference overall between your average Sky owner and average Solstice owner. I'm 46 and sometimes feel like part of the "young" group at our events if that tells you anything. If we get younger folks out to our events, they usually find them boring and tame...and the group usually finds them rash and dangerous (had one young man try to power slide his car in a U-turn and just about hit another member's car...) so they rarely come back for a second try. Conversely, I very rarely see members at autocross or racing events except Gassor and I. So that's probably why you see more of the socialization aspect on this site and more of the technical discussion on the Solstice sites. It's kind of the nature of the owners and how they flocked to each platform. Of course this isn't a blanket statement for ALL owners of the two different cars (lord knows I fall into more the Pontiac side of that generalization...) but this is the general vibe I get from the two sites and two sides. Many of my peers have bought C5s and we bench race them, drive each others cars when we are together and all that, but I think it's a lot of appreciation both ways. I've driven both and think most those guys (most have also had NC miatas) would be in sky redlines if there was more aftermarket and bigger initial buying msrket, which go hand in hand. Around here sky's aren't terribly rare since we are right outside the assembly plant in philly but elsewhere there are people who don't even know what they are. At this point, I don't know there is a difference in taste per age, now that both brands are debunked. The sol is cheaper to buy which I guess might be a catalyst but only by a couple thousand at most. I think the sky has aged much better and these cars are give or take 1/2 about simply looking great. My neighbor is convinced it's a Ferrari or something, I haven't had the heart to just explain its a saturn, same brand that had great pop out door panels and all that...or that the cleaning lady daily drives a SLP stage 2 regal [emoji52] |

Plus our local club (San Diego group) seems to have pulled in the reins on drives. Possibly if Robo and I ever get the Inland Empire Club up and going I can be more involved. No car shows or runs until after the FJ National in July it appears. Then I have my Palm Springs run the end of September, and hopefully Robo will get is Las Vegas/Mount Whitney run together for October I think San Diego has gone quiet because Myrna and Eric are planning their wedding and no one else down there EVER plans anything. It's sort of like slapstick comedy in real life. Could you be the guy who hired larry curly and moe expecting a well-painted house only to be flustered when they've only painted themselves? Meanwhile, you still want to paint your house. That said, tons of useful info on here but it's so much harder to sift through than any of the other forums I've been on, including some sister platform forums. It's admittedly frustrating.
Also id be curious to the demographics here and our interests and all that. I'm a 29 year old dude who likes fast and weird cars. Would guess I'm on the younger end of the scale but with the same fascination, which is why we all own these. Love the car and the platform. I guess I hang out in Different forums. the 10 plus years in the Corvair forum, and many many more in several WW forums, I never experienced one with personal attacks like have been done here. Can't really say why, but never in my 25 plus years of internet forums (ok there were some bad usenet groups) Never deployed the nuke option until this place. I never blocked another users post until this place, but that seems to be working for me to make this a friendly place, and not one I just get pissed off coming to. Anyhow. I enjoy this place, and even in my short time here, have seen some great contributors leave which is a shame, Still don't know the back story on GMtech but he seems to be a good guy. Not really sure why I even bothered to post here but thought I would throw my 1 cent in. |

Possibly if Robo and I ever get the Inland Empire Club up and going I can be more involved. Leaving the first of June for three weeks, with several main train areas to be seen, ride the Durango to Silverton route, the Winslow to the Grand Canyon, and several in Oregon. Will see what I can find in British Columbia as we will pass thru there in the second week of the trip and then over to the Tetons and Yellowstone. No car shows or runs until after the FJ National in July it appears. This is not intended to offend anyone, just my view of this board. I don't think there is anyone on this site that I don't like. I enjoy everyone's posts, and the questions, but this place is dead as a door nail. It used to be a lot of fun, and it died about the time Mike got banned and Marvic1 left. I don't want to hurt anyone's feeling, but where do some of you come from. If the things Mike says on occasion really ruin your day, your year and you have to leave because of what has been said, WHERE THE HELL do you live. A land of butter flies, chocolate cake and pixies? Mike is about as real as you can get. The old adage sticks and stones comes to mind. I don't want to see continuous fighting or arguing, but Mike makes some hilarious comments, but most just take them as evil. He is one of the nicest, most helpful people on this board. A little rough around the edges, but if my information is correct, he was a homicide detective in New York City, so he has seen things that most would never dream of. He does not sugar coat stuff and I for one am very glad he is back and makes his occasional jab!!!! We have no banter, nothing to get the fire going. I am on a model train forum that gets far roudier than this place. I would guess knitting sites are much tougher. Were here to have fun, learn about the car and have a good day. Nothing more. The drone in here is deafening. ![]() |

I like the decorum of this forum. I have been on others that are just plain stupid. My skin is thick: I'm a person that understands better than most that if you dish it out you better be able to take it. I understand this better than anyone else I know IRL. I didn't grow up in a crystal palace, but it wasn't NYC, and I was far from a cop. That said, I wasn't around here during the Halcyon Days of the wild west before they killed our cars. I like this forum because it seems to be comprised of folks "of a certain age" that seem to know how to behave. I'd never be accused of being a snowflake, not here (nor where I grew up), but the confusion between "being PC" and striving to be considerate is a confusion that needs to be cleared up, and/or killed. I don't believe that the folks that rail against PC are inconsiderate - maybe they just haven't learned that there is a difference between being PC and being considerate. Some of my most giving, kindly IRL friends are jerks if you judge them on first impression (even if they are monstrosities online, because they are), and some of the nicest folks online are monsters in person. I think the moderators want decency here. I trust them to do a number on the ones that cross that line, and I'll do my job by continuing to enjoy this forum - lack of warts, that some seem to pine for, and all. |
