what was the official expalination for the bad tranmissions in skys?

was it water contamination? if so, how did it get there?

can they be repaired, or do they have to be replaced?

how many transmissions are affected?

is this a problem which is likely to show up after driving for a certain number of miles?

or is this much ado about nothing?

Very good questions....
Hopefully most will be answered.
Important to see how Saturn handles it too.

Yes...for once, those are some excellent questions...and ones that I myself would like answers to since I'm awaiting delivery of an automatic.

My guess is we'll never know the real story as to where the water came from or why. I've been told that it is not related directly to any issues that a customer encounters - but don't take that to the bank, it's third hand info.

As to the questions on scope of the issue - I would think this is covered in dealer service information.

well you have to know that this is just the Automatics, the manuals are not effected... so that eliminates most of the cars that have already been built.

Ok...could be just the computer 'geek' in me...but isn't "tia" an acronym in computer-speak for "thanks in advance"? I could be wrong. If her name really is Tia...I apologize.

I've had this info on in other threads, but here goes.

My auto tranny Sky exhibited problems at 84 miles - LED shifter lights failed and car locked in only 1st gear when in Drive. On-Star tow (flat bed) to my dealer for analysis. This was on Wed 5/17. On Sat 5/20, I visited dealer and my Sky was on the lift, with 4 people around looking at the tranny problem. One was factory engineer from Saturn Tenn and the other was an engineer from the tranny manufacturer.

It was definitely water in the tranny, saw it with my own eyes.

Long discussion short: How did it get there? I have heard and read several explanations, none of which I'm sure I buy.

The solution (to Saturn's credit) is replacement of the transmission, not repairing the existing one (mine was packaged and returned to the manufacturer).

Don't know how many were affected, but as we have all been seeing on the forum, they are scattered all over the country and occur at different #'s of accumulated mileage.

I have my Sky back and it is functioning perfectly (new transmission).

:D   :driving:

It's good that Saturn takes such problems on this first year car so seriously. Think about that for a second, you have two high level engineers out looking at a car at a dealership ON A SATURDAY! And I'm assuming both are from out of state...though I imagine Tenn isn't far from NC. LOL Still!

your car will probably be ok, but if it starts laying on its side and licking its driveshaft, you best take it to the dealer.
