I'm looking to replace my tires and have already gone from stock to an 18 x 8 rim with 40mm offset and 255/45 tires.
I found a really good sight to compare sizes but thought I'd ask for real world experience. I have adjustable coilovers so I can change height but I'd love to put some more "meat" on her, especially in the back.
I'm not opposed to different sizes on the front and back as I've gone thru the whole suspension and alignments and I'm aware of the disadvantages...

Wondering if I can get away with 285/40's or at least a 275/40.

I have 275/40/18 front and back but on 9" rims with +55 offset.

Extra wide tires up front could negatively affect steering behaivior so keep that in-mind. If you insist on "bigger", I would start with only the rears.

If making the change for improved grip, consider keeping the stock size, but change tires to ones known to grip better.
