I acquired a set of 2007 Sky chrome wheels with black spoke inserts that appear to be factory. I've never seen a set and cannot find a photo of the rims with inserts. The chrome rims are perfect, taken off when the car was new. At 12 years old, by date code, the tires are subtle and no cracking. Anyone wanted a proper date coded set of tires for show, just let me know. I have the tires removed and stored.

I want to know more about the inserts if anyone has information...factory, dealer, after market...and if available, where. I appreciate any information. I'll try to post some photos later.

Thanks,
Richard Snipes

I have never seen or heard of these....pic would be helpful but it is something that never existed...just saying. Always remember, everything and everything is possible but not probable.

Must be some sort of aftermarket non-GM part.

Clarification please on the back spoke inserts. :)

Could be a specific dealer option upgrade. something insanely rare to find. Never know. But most likely they are look-a-like aftermarket wheels.

I believe what was passed off as "Black Spoke Inserts" were actually "protective" covers that were put on the chrome wheels to protect them during shipping. That was about the time that OEs were trying to do everything they could to protect the wheels and rotors from any type of environmental damage. We had a new Navigator come in around 2007 that had this protective cover over the chromes and when the customer saw it, thought about it and wanted them to stay on the rims. We explained that this was a protective covering to keep the chrome out of the elements and he said he wanted them to stay on the wheels. Ultimately we left them on until he came in about 6 weeks later and asked us to remove them. So what you saw....may have been this....and the owner could have even painted them. Most though would usually warp from brake temp...Lincoln eventually went to a complete plastic cover over the entire wheel, but that didn't last long either as it left glue on the wheels when prep would try to take it off....

Or you could have seen something similar to this. Many aftermarket companies are now doing this so that the tuner guys can paint/match their wheel inserts to their cars. Here's an example of a chrome insert for black wheels: https://hardtofindcaps.com/store/1-wheel-worth-insert-overlay-cap-boss-333-chrome-inserts-for-22-black-wheel-2/

Sorry guys, I forgot I even posted this here. Will put photos up tomorrow. Thought I'd included that but... These are too nice to be something someone just threw on the rims as each spoke insert is identically spaced and oriented..And, yes, they are genuine GM, chrome, with part numbers. Not a mark on them, clean inside as off the shelf. Tires properly dated coded for 2007, no cracks, soft and subtle as the new tires I put on the rims.

Thanks,

You may call anything you want, except the requisite late for lunch. BTW, TS...I sent you photos of these rims in a PM, I believe, about them being real Sky/GM rims and the bolt pattern. Chop noted these earlier for sale on Craigslist, and no one was interested. I guess they did not meet the high bar for Sky interest at the time. No one showed up about them in Orlando, FL. Since a refurb set on eBay is $1600.00, I thought $200 with the tires was reasonable and worth the hell of driving to Orlando to pick them up. I just wanted a set until I pick up my spare solstice chrome rim in SC but have kinda grown to like them. Without the black insert I wouldn't look at them twice.

Have fun, tear 'em up, put 'em down...I don't really care, unless you have some information of substance to offer. If it's some aftermarket trim thing then quote the source. If you've seen another set, provide a photo. The insert goes to the edge of the rim flush with the edge. Did not move when I had new tires installed. While I did see what appears to be these wheel on a Daewoo G2X in a Korean brochure. I asked RedOne 07 about it, since he posted the brochure photos. He's never seen a set on a car either, in person or photos. It's interesting since these have been off the original car, in storage, for over 12 years. The owner left these with his neighbor to sell rather than cart them in the move out of state.

Needless to say I am pleased with them. Could not have bought a nicer set using Doc Wonmug's time machine.

The photos...

seems my words are taken a bit out of context, here are the G2X and GT brochures with the alleged black spokes . . . .

My feeling it that it is just the light , shade, shine.

I don't recall seeing these before - but I could be forgetting. In any case, they are definitely real Sky wheels, but it looks like someone has just added black vinyl strips to the spokes. Looks pretty cool, but not factory AFAIK.

Pretty good buy for $200, and I am very partial to the Sky wheel design :)

It is interesting to me that all the images in those two photos are the same, identical other than color. The background and foregrounds are the same, wheel position is the same.

Hmm.

I just noticed something about the Saturn, Daewoo, and Opel wheels I had never paid attention to before, only proving that you continue to learn something new every day . . .

Thanks all for contributing to this thread.

It's cheaper to take one pic. We do this all the time....Photoshop is my best friend. We take the same pic and "mirror" it or change the color all the time. All of the Akebono pads on all of the parts websites were "photoshopped" by me. Remove the background, cleaned up the smuches, etc...

I'm well aware of most of those "tricks". What I find interesting is that the G2x brochure was for Korea where only 182 (or 179) cars were sold, versus the other Opel GT brochure which was for European area where more than 7500 Kappas were sold. I would expect a different content brochure for the two different cultures. The markets are quite diverse, or so I would expect. I'm probably wrong!

Off to search for "Akebono" (later by a bit: learn new stuff all the time)
