I bought a S2000 and got ripped off - S2KI Honda S2000 Forums

Short version is that this guy in NY saw an ad on CL for an S2000 with a factory hard top, some after market coil overs and other parts listed for sale. He flew out to CA, saw the car, took pictures of the car with said parts on the car. He agreed to purchase the car, gave the seller the money and left it with the seller to arrange transport back to NY.

When the car arrived in NY, no factory hard top, stand, cover, or coil overs. He calls the seller and the seller says we didn't agree to sell you the car with those parts. You bought it as is. Refuses to send parts and eventually (it appears) sells them to someone else.

Internet blows up and this thing goes viral.

Lesson to be learned here, always, Always, ALWAYS put EVERY detail in writing when selling something over $500. Verbal contracts are not valid if the contract is for over $500. Had this been in writing this case is a slam dunk for the buyer. While he is in conversation with the seller now to resolve the issue, it is a royal pain.

I hope this gets worked out to the buyer's satisfaction and I feel for him having to go through this. It sucks. I hope this is a warning for anyone else when buying a car or other high dollar items private party. A written contract isn't saying you don't trust the seller, it's saying we both agree to this and this is protecting both of us. Only someone who doesn't wish to honor the contract would be afraid of a simple written contract.

Chop Top, got to read that thread. It wound up taking their Yelp rating from 4.5 starts to 1. They had to shut down their Facebook page and start a new on. People were flooding the shop with phone calls. People, not the buyer either, found his personal social media accounts and were talking about people calling his wife and newborn child. It was getting nuts.

I'm all for getting this resolved but thankfully cooler heads prevailed before they drug the guys family into it.

In this age of transparency you have to be as honest as possible. All that being said he should've left with the car imo. Never be that trusting.

When a bait & switch story makes it to Jalopnik, it's pretty much over for the seller. Group. ???? why was the Jalopnik link changed to "Group".

I have to admit providing the sellers pic for a basis of creating meme's is rather amusing. BTW, looks like the buyer has been advised by his lawyer to not make any more posts. This situation makes me wonder if the same support would have been given to a Kappa member.

Oh I think if word got around enough a Kappa owner would get the same support. It's pretty much a bum deal what the seller did to him.

I'm with WR on this one...he should have had something set up so that if he wanted the car when he saw it to have it transported back to NY. At the very least, he should have had something written in writing signed by both parties documenting EXACTLY what was included with the sale.

Anyone else getting phone calls to sell sky?

Husband Jim got a phone call on his cell at 6pm tonight, he answers and hands the phone to me, they asked for you. I'm thinking who the hell I know would call Jim's cell and not mine, so I answer. It's a man and he is calling from Classic Chevrolet in Owasso, Oklahoma he wants to know if I still own a 07 Saturn Sky and if I would be interested in selling it? Yes I still own it and NO I'm not interested in selling it. He says, "Well I just thought I would ask, I hope that's OK". My response, it's OK but we don't live in Oklahoma we retired and moved to Florida, he says that will be updated on the mailing list. What's really bizarre is I NEVER took Skybaby to that dealer for any work, none. We bought the corvette through that dealer and my impala but I guess Chevrolet or GM has all that information on the computer since I did take Skybaby to South Point in Tulsa for work. Sales guy must a did some digging to find me, I should of asked how much for Skybaby, nope not selling.

Tulsasky,
And yes I'm in Florida now :x

I would have said "I'm not trying to sell my Sky, but if you make a good enough offer...."

This is terrible story. When I had buy my SKY, I dedicate to Ohio Dealer everything. He did so perfect work for me. I pray he can get his money or stuff back.

I bought my Sky from a private seller in Texas, sight completely unseen, and had shipped across the world to Germany. There was a very high chance of getting ripped off, but the car was exactly as he described and he was really helpful for the whole transaction.

It's too bad that this guy got ripped off, but what I really want to know is--who pays $33,000 for an S2000?!

I agree completely. I would never buy a vehicle that I could not drive home or load onto a trailer the instant I provided payment.

My other question is, what was under the hood to justify $33k??
Because the rest of the honda with Coil Overs and a hard top does not justify that.

I was wondering that too. I have no idea what the S2000 market is but damn that seems like a lot of money. Only thing I can think of is that the factory hard top and stand in that condition with the convertible top is rare but even posters on there said it was only $5000 in parts and that was including a $2000 set of coil overs.
