Last Thursday I was at Saturn of West Palm Beach at 7:30AM, with barely 100 miles on the ODO, to find out why my Sky"s auto trans was, at times, not shifting thru the gears when in Drive position. They could not find a problem and I was told by the service tech that perhaps the trans was "learning" my way of driving and to drive it and see if the problem went away. Well....I went and drove it in the vicinity of the dealership for a while and sure enough it did it again and I went directly to the service dept. and had the service tech go for a ride. He watched as I accelarated and the car would not shift properly and saw that the red LED's next to the shift positions lit up or did not light up when changing positions from PARK down to 1. After further investigation I was told that the trans was "contaminated"(water in the trans) and Saturn was overnighting a new trans. The next day(Friday) no trans showed up and they swore that they showed on their computer that a trans had been sent. Now they tell me it will arrive on Monday. Monday comes around and when I call Saturn I am told that even though their computer showed it had been sent there was ,in fact, no trans shipped out of the factory. Around 6:00PM Monday I finally get a call from the sales manager and he telss me that it's going to take 6 to 8 days to get a trans. He has also told me that the siver Sky in the showroom has the same problem with it's trans.
Has anyone else had or heard of this problem with auto trans?

just curious, how does water get into multiple brand new, trannys straight from the factory?

found this on the other forum--

"They did however tell me it is a problem that the transmission company (Aisin) has run into before. Apparently there is a faulty seal on a wiring harness that goes on some of these model transmissions that is allowing water to get into the gear box. It mostly just sucks cause it is a great car. It felt like my girlfriend just broke up with me"

and this--

"Their's is a TSB (technical service bulletins) for this condition.
Applicable only to the auto tranny.
Anyone with a Automatic Sky, check with your local retailer to see if your car is affected by it."

does this have anything to do with water coming in through the seals around the top?
you are talking about the top of the transmission and not the car's convertible top.... right?

This is making me nervous. These major engine problems are disturbing. The test will be how Saturn handles them.
no engine problems that I have heard of yet.... this is the Automatic transmission, not the engine...

What are the VINs of each with bad tranny?

I asked about ours, VIN 2535, today. Service manager told this item was checked out during our PDI on Saturday, 6/4. So far, so good.

VINs would help - post for those with problems, please

Can anyone with this problem post a VIN so we can begin to understand if this was a batch done at same time or if it is generalized?! Appreciate it.

Oh, duh. Forgive me, I'm just a girl, if it is all under the hood to me it is an engine..still...a tranny is a problemo, right?
so you can impress your girlfriends (or boyfriend for that matter) the transmission on a rear wheel drive car is not under the hood like front wheel drive cars... on the Sky and most other rear wheel drive cars it is under the center of the car behind the engine, on a corvette and a few others it is at the rear of the car just in front of or built into the rear axle called a Transaxle.....

You Rock, Skyman...I had no idea. Does that make it easier to get to? Seems as if it would...I have owned only front wheel drive cars my whole life, come to think of it..oh, except my old Pontiac Catalina...1970 model with a HUGE demundo engine. It and a tree had a small misunderstanding..I was 17 and a "no drive". What do you think, a bad batch of trannys or a fluke? You seem sorta laid back about it so that makes me feel better....

Awwww crap...I'm waiting on my automatic Sky to be delivered. I had actually heard about this problem (with a wiring harness) awhile back on the Saturnfans Sky forum, but blew it off cuz it didn't seem to hold a lot of weight over there....only to find out here, that it turned out to be true. I would be extremely disappointed if I end up needing a new trans right away....that's not exactly the way I envisioned my first experience with a owning a Saturn to go.
