I have a rail car number but I can't find a way to track it through CSX which is the railway that is bringing my Sky to Florida. Does anyone have a link or phone number for CSX that would allow me to track the rail car in a similar fashion to UP railways? Any info would be much appreciated!

I'll find my post. But I think CSX is a hard one to track but I'm not sure mine only goes by truck. USMC got all the info from the Solstice forum and tracked his car. So I'm fringing his forward and a few other post from the Solstice Forum

Here you go:

Tracking your Sky by Train.... Can be done....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a thread USMC put together for tracking your Sky by Train. So I'm bringing it forward for those who need info on how to do this.

Also a reminder, if going by truck only your dealer can set up an online tracking account with most trucking company's which will tell them when the car gets into their inventory and when they expect it to ship I will post the Trucking company's that we know of on the Solstice forum.

Also if your dealership is close to the train depot where your car will sit untill the Trucking company gets a full load if he is willing he can make arrangements to go to tyhe train depot and pick up yopur car, but he has to be willing to.

Thank USMC for putting together this info !!

tracking the shipping process

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spent a good time of my day following some advice from, once again, our friends at the SOL forum. I discovered that there is a way to track your Sky thru the rail system all the way to your local railyard IF its being shipped via Union Pacific Railroad.

step by step--- (this took me a few hours)

1- find out from your dealer what trucking company transports the cars from the trainyard to the dealership.

2- call the trucking company and (being super super nice) tell them you have a car being shipped from GM to your local dealer and that you would like the "railcar" number. This is tricky because they are not supposed to talk to the general public. If they won't help you you can ask your dealer to call and get the railcar number for you. you will need you entire VIN number to get the railcar number. So if you don't have the entire VIN, don't bother calling or bothering your dealer. If you don't already know, you can ask the trucking company which train company the use. In my case, it gets to final destination by union pacific.

3 - take that railcar number and goto the union pacific rail site. They have online trace capability. Very similiar to tracking a UPS or fedex package.

4- do the trace-- bammo!!! It will tell you the status of the railcar. I'm not sure yet how often the UP site is updated. My last entry on the site trace is 5/13 and today is 5/15.

5- When the railcar gets to lordstown, the cars are offloaded and wait for the appropriate train going in your direction. when they are loaded back on a railcar... its a different railcar with a different number.
so, for myself... the last info I have is that its at lordstown. They don't show an updated railcar number yet for me so its safe to assume its still sitting at lordstown.
when its reloaded, I will get a new railcar number to trace.

a little more info---

When you go code 4200, that means that your car was picked up from the plant and began shipping to Lordstown, OH. In Lordstown, you sky joins the rest of the GM clan (cobalts, etc..) and waits for another train to head out in your direction. The train shipper from lordstown is CSX.

Through my searching, I found that my railcar is not in UP's possession yet but still in the possession of CSX. The UP trace site is linked to CSX's so it showed me the status even though CSX has the car.

I called CSX just to see if they could give me more detailed info, like when they plan on leaving lordstown and I found that CSX won't tell you a thing! They are very tight lipped.

the next part is for people out WEST----
Once your car is loaded back on to the railcar, CSX will take it to the Chicago area. In my case, Bensenville, IL. In Bensenville...Union pacific takes possession of the railcar and it will finish the trip via UP all the way to Cali.

in short-- CSX= plant to lordstown to chicago
Union pacific = from chicago to Cali
local trucker = from UP railyard to dealer.

My situation for you to compare---

my car "shipped" 5/9 which means it went from the plant to lordstown.

the same day, it went code 4800 which means it was unloaded at lordstown, awaiting a full load out west possibly??

today is 5/15 and my railcar shows "empty" and sitting in lordstown. so its been 6 days and its still in OHio.

I understand that the trip from the plant to chicago is the longest part, once UP takes possession, its a straight shot to CALI... about 5-7 days.

then it can sit at the railyard for 48 hours. I believe they have 48 hours to get it off the train and on a truck out of the railyard.

If you are not out west, then you may have to just call the appropriate shipping companies and try the same thing I did. Be courteous to everyone you talk to, cause if they help you, they are doing you a huge favor.

Good night, and good luck

Here is the list of railroad companies and trucking companies:

RAILROADS:

Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) DOES NOT TRANSPORT SOLSTICE
www.bnsf.com
Laura Pomerville
(708) 924-6719

Norfolk Southern Corp (NSCorp)
www.nscorp.com

CSX
www.csx.com
This company seems to be the one bringing them from Wilmington to Lordstown, Ohio.
I think they connect with UPRR in St. Louis.

Canadian National
www.cn.ca

Canadian Pacific Railway
www8.cpr.ca

Union Pacific Rail Road
www.uprr.com
This company picks up Solstice in St. Louis and Chicago (Gibson?).
They deliver basicly west of a line from Chicago to New Orleans, but not Minneapolis. And once in Janesville, WI and Fairfax, KS, they lose control of the vehicle to GM (GM's plants in those two places.)

Here's some great info from clamato:

It tells me that my car is currently south of Tuscon lumbering ever so slowly to Phoenix (I didn't think Solstices could lumber!).

Rail Car Info

Thanks for all the help. I did do a search on trucking companies and read those threads that you posted. They were helpful, but I didn't see any way to access CSX other than the link which doesn't offer any tracking options.

I was unaware that the UP trace feature is linked up with CSX. I entered my rail car # and it tells me that it is in Canada somewhere and the post date is 7/20/06. Clearly this is old data since the car just left the plant on 8/23/06.

Anyway, I didn't have any other options for tracking through CSX, so I thought I'd see if you guys knew anything.

If there are any additional things I could try, I would sure appreciate it. But if not, I guess I'll just try to spend my few skyless days patiently! Thanks again!

CSX is only linked to the UP site if the railcar is going to get transfered to UP at anytime during its trip.

If your car is going to stay on CSX for the entire trip, then UP will not reflect the latest data.

Thats my understanding anyway.

as far as getting any info out of CSX.... good luck. They told me they could not due to security reasons but then UP has a website to track you car... go figure.

there are very few ppl that were able to get info out of CSX... either they had friends there or got very lucky. I called them multiple times over a week in hopes that I would get someone different each time and someone would bend the rules for me. No luck on the bending of the rules, but everyone there knows me by first name now!!! hehehe

where did you get your railcar number from? (sounds like its not the correct #)

the railcar you were given could have been the railcar being used to transport it to lordstown... its possible that it switched cars in lordstown to a railcar heading south OR It may be sitting in lordstown right now. Mine sat in lordstown for nearly 10 days before being shipped out.

My car was shipped out Aug 9th and once again I called GM Canada to see where it currently is. They were very nice and told me they KNOW NOTHING! I asked if I could get a rail car number and they said they are not privy to that information. So as you can see us Canadians really are at the mercy of who knows who on knowing when a car arrives or where it is at. I even told the service rep that once I get the car (almost 19 months now) I will be sending GM (Corp) a letter explaining how inadequate the service is for us Canadians and that we truly feel we are second class citizens. She was polite in telling me she would be contacting me once she got the letter. They all go to her department and no one at GM Corp cares. So that is my  .
