byebyebaby received their Solstice last December. You were not a member then, so I do not know if you were reading the site. There was most certainly a shortage of rail cars and auto rail cars, at the time byebyebaby was waiting on their "baby". GM even had to ship cars from Mexico by boat to get past the shortage.

There may not be a shortage today, but there was then.

Here are several threads from last Fall that mention the rail car shortage. They represent information from several dealerships, GM and even a quote from another web site.

Maybe GM had a shortage to due a lack of planning, etc...but nationally there wasn't a shortage. I work in Finance for a railroad and directly negotiate railcar leases/purchases with the large railcar providers like TTX, GE etc..In the case of Auto Racks specifically, the Class 1 carriers, and TTX, provide the bulk of Auto Racks. Pontiac moves a lot through Chicago on the UP and there is never a shortage there. Especially with the slowdown of U.S. production of cars and large inventories over the past few years, if anything there was an abundance of Auto Racks.

Thanks for the insight.

There still seems to be a disconnect between what the public (dealerships included) sees being said by others and what you are reporting. GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, VW, and Mercedes all have stated that they believe there are rail shortage issues, at least as late as last Fall (The time frame in question).

Even the Executive Director of a committee that includes rail carriers believes that one of the ongoing problems with using rail is the shortage of bilevel and trilevel railcars.

Well that is the view from "our side of the tracks".

May just be the same type of perception problem that GM suffers from.

Note: To readers, just keep in mind we are "off topic" by a little. We are not dealing with harper's 2007 Solstice, we are talking in general about last Fall and byebyebaby's 2006 Solstice.

Well, I can obviously only tell you what I see, and what I have been told by my contacts.

Admittedly, it is possible that for very, very short durations there is a shortage. But if you could see the equipment guide I have, that lists every single raicar in North America, you'd see the overwhelming amount of Auto Racks. Grain Hoppers, Steel Gondolas and even recently Boxcars have gone through shortages. Out of curiosity, I asked my boss about this at lunch today, and he commented that in the past 5-6 years there has definitely not been an Auto Rack shortage.

IMO, the two legitimate parameters I would blame an issue like byebyebaby's are, one for the manufacturer, and one for the RR:

Poor logistical planning and car apportioning on the part of the Auto company. Railroads are pretty good at knowing their capacity, not so good at scheduling, though (this is where I think RRs have to get much better). But it is an auto plant that will tell the railroad that they need, say - two 90 car trains. If they project short, then there's trouble. If they all the sudden decide to shift inventory, which is very rare, then again you will have exceeded capacity for that one plant.

Or, a fixed rail infrastructure (and there is no other type in rail) that simply has a ripple effect when any little thing goes wrong. Meaning, I've seen a railcar get delayed for near a week in Kansas City because there was a derailment in Omaha. With rail, re-routing isn't that easy so when things go bad, they go really bad. It's much easier to divert on public roads for trucks than on privately owned rail lines.

The bottom line is, the railcars are there, the planning and forethought is sometimes not.

As long as byebyebaby's dealership's is off the hook, I am willing to leave it there, with blame on the railroads and GM, and call it a day.
