Issues With Relatching Convertible Top

564 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  JohnnyG
I am having difficulties relatching the convertible top on my 2009 Sky Redline. Once unlatched I've no problem with the top retracting into the trunk. The problem arises when trying to relatch into the header. I took my Sky to a shop that specializes in convertible tops. The proprietor could not diagnose the problem without removing the header and discerning whether I need to replace a part or if the problem is remedied by some sort of an adjustment. If anyone has encountered this problem with their sky could you please let me know what you did to rectify the situation.

There are two adjustable "stops" in the trunk area, one on each side that prevent the top from traveling too far forward which in your case, might be your problem. If adjusted favoring rearward, the center latch above the windshield is not achievable like you are experiencing.

There is a fine line between latching it tightly which pulls the top nice and tight, and latching it loosely which I found to present issues with fitment in other places. I replaced my top which took numerous tries for me to adjust the over-all fitment to my satisfaction. There are so many dynamics going on when adjusting the top. In the end, I favored "difficult latching". My wife struggles to latch it. I find it to be only a minor inconvenience.

This is one of the two "stops" I refer to.

What specific problem are you having? How long has it been going on?

Had a similar sounding problem...took herculean efforts to pull the top close enough to engage the latch. Adjusted stops as rjgramps indicates, which definitely solved the problem. For me though, it also created a new one - now the windows rub the top when closing the doors with the windows up. Have an idea on how to resolve that but haven't applied it as yet.
The windows are adjustable. Pull the door panel and adjust the window as needed to get a proper seal. Covered in depth on both this and the Sol forum

Yeah, but I'm reluctant to try that. I've read some comments that it doesn't stay where you put it and you end up with the same problem again and also, the weather stripping is very well matched to the window position after 14 years together (which possibly leads to it ending up back where it was).
if your windows are rubbing, you can loosen up the bolts that hold the top to the car in the trunk and lift the entire assemble up and retighten.
Now that's an interesting solution that I don't think I've come across before? Will take a look!
