Ok, first a disclaimer... Overall I do like the car. It's a 2010 E350 4matic (AWD).

 It drives well in the snow (stops like crap, but they're AS tires not snow tires).
 It drives GREAT in the rain up here (the set of Conti's I have on it are GREAT wet tires).
 Of course, it's also great on dry
 Handles great for a sedan. Not as crisp or overall as fun to drive as the 535xi it replaced, but good for a sedan.
 Rides like a Benz SHOULD ride. It's nicer on the hinny than the anything else in the stable (except maybe the LeSabre, lol!)

Ok... the rant:

[email protected]#^# whoever thought it would be a good idea to have a "closed" automatic transmission. :| :banghead: Corporate, some engineer, whoever... they can kiss my rear end. When we got the car we were told it's a lifetime transmission. One fluid & filter change at ~ 35K, seal it back up and done. Forever.

Well, apparently they kills a lot of transmissions that way, so now they're recommending replace fluid and filter like every 20K.

Now... draining and dropping the pan is super easy. Remove a protective plate (or two if you're also changing engine oil)... add a protective shield to keep crap off suspension parts (only for AWD models), no biggie...

But filling... since there is no dipstick or fill tube, you have to pump the fluid up into the tranny through the overflow. Not too awful bad. There are plenty of disposable fluid pumps that can do the job. Oh, there's more pain in the ass to flush and/or drain the torque converter, but I'll gloss over that.

Then, you get to check the fluid level.

Get ready for this high tech method...

- Fill the transmission mostly full.
- Turn on the car, shift through the gears.
- Finish filling to what the level should be at.
- Run the car to get the Tranny into the proper temp range.
- Look and what splashes out of the overflow hole.
--- Heavy/steady flow = overfilled
--- Sputtering flow = good
--- Light spitting = underfilled

:surprise:

Seriously??? Inventor of the damned automobile and THAT is your high freaking tech measuring method?!?!?!?!?!? :banghead:

My 2000 BMW 740il was the same. In fact, local mechanic tried to follow the procedure and ended up completely trashing my tranny. $6K later...

It's flipping stupid.

It's supposed to hold 8.5L. You'd think you could just put in 8.5 and call it good, but noooo... Because you can't be 100% sure you got it all out :|

Supposedly, even measuring the fluid you remove and replacing that amount isn't good enough because good oil and used/bad oil respond differently to heat?

I'm tempted to just bite the bullet on this one and pay the dealer to do it. :|

My daughter is on her 2nd Mercedes. All of her maintenance is done by the dealer. It seems expensive for each trip, but they're infrequent. In the long run, the dealer service isn't really that expensive, and she gets a loaner to drive. Recently, she had her 2013 C250 in for service, and they gave her a new E300 loaner. Now she wants one of those.

Rusty I think your right. I do not see many broken down Merc's on the side of road, or them on the back of the roll back headed to the dealers. You get what you pay for. Might be expensive? Infrequent and loaner there you go, business as usual. Service and charge. Up to factory specs. Repeat customer, who could be looking to upgrade.

On to the rant: Damn! An anal inspection on a Rhino, would be easier than that. Safer,... maybe not. But hey I'll let the factory guys handle that procedure anytime, they F' up, all on them. You can't get around stupid sometimes. Benz, BMW, Jag or a Lambo, but come on. You have to do what? For how much? Yeah, ok now I got it not. In fact ask one of their mechanics, if he has ever worked that procedure on a Rhino before?

Good battle in the 24 Hrs. at Daytona right now.
