Discussion Starter #1
Hi all - I am one of the web developers for the 2015 event, and we received a cease and desist letter from the North American Society for Sport Management instructing us to stop using their trademarked "NASSM" abbreviation in association with our events.

I researched their trademark and spoke to their attorney, and I reached out to the organizers of both the 2015 and 2016 events. After some discussion, we have offered to put a "not affiliated with" disclaimer on the 2015 websites and social media pages, and then ask future organizers to NOT use these initials on any events in 2016 and beyond.

The organizers of the 2016 event have a good grasp of the legal issues and will be sharing more details regarding re-naming their event after they have a chance to talk to the attorney themselves, so expect something in the next few days/weeks.

The attorney for the Sports Management folks called the second I walked in the door this morning and we discussed our options for 2016 and moving forward. I will post a thread on the issue this evening.

That's pretty bizarre, actually. There's no "dilution of brand" going on here. It's not even a published term, since it's only discussed among owners (not the general public).

Sounds like lawyers wanting to get their hourly's in :(

Clearly there is no confusion between a bunch of sports management professionals and a loosely organized group of car enthusiasts. But it's not worth the fight.

As for the hourly's, for revising all of the event waivers several years ago, resolving the NASSM issue for 2016 going forward, and other legal advice I've rendered to the Kappa community, I have received a grand total of $0.

My point is that NASSM has a right to protect their trademark, I have no doubt the lawyer was instructed to contact us by his client (the lawyer wasn't just churning the file for billables), and the lawyer was very nice when I spoke to him.

Contrary to what the media would have you believe, lawyers have no interest in wasting their time or anyone else's time, in an ill-conceived effort at financial gain. And some of us even gift our time and effort to others.

As a follow-up, I am going to give folks the week to provide feedback and then I will put a survey up at Survey Monkey or somewhere similar :)

Why not just drop a S from the Acronym

NASM North American Sky/Solstice Meet

Still sounds the same.
