Newbie here.

I just bought the dream car I always wanted. 2009 Sky redline non turbo hydro blue. Love the cornering and looks of this little fella. Getting off the Harley since there's too many idiots out there w/ no respect for other people on the road. I was told this car was a collector car? Not sure about that. The old fella that sold it to me really didn't know much about it other than he loved to drive it. Never even used the CD player.

I just picked up an 09 Hydro Blue w/ a 2.4 in it. It's a manual shift. Love the color w/ the silver stripe on it. It's not a turbo but prev owner said it's a redline. has alum rocker plates and all else but no turbo. I researched and it was listed as one of only 12 built this way. Any iput would be appreciated.:laugh:

Hi bluejackola! Welcome to the forum.

If it does not have a turbo, it is most likely not a Red Line.

The Red Line designation was for those vehicles with the LNF 2.0 L turbo charged engine. The eighth digit in the VIN number of a real Red Line is "X". A "B" in the eighth digit means 2.4 L, and the car has simply been re-badged by a previous owner, with external and internal trim pieces added or replaced.

Here's a great post from our forum showing the VIN digits and their meanings:
EDIT INFO : The below info is from the Helm's manual:

1st digit: Country of Origin;
Character 1 = USA

2nd digit: Manufacturer;
Character G = General Motors

3rd digit: Make;
Character Z = Saturn

4th & 5th digits: Carline Series;
Characters MB = Base Convertible Sky
Characters MG = Sport Convertible Sky

6th digit: Body Style;
Character 3 = 2-Door, Convertible

7th digit: Restraint Systems;
Character 2 = Active Manual Belts w/ Driver & Passenger Supplemental Inflatable Restraint Frontal

8th digit: Engine Type;
Character X = RPO LNF, Gas, 4cyl., 2.0L, DI, Alum., Turbo, GM
Character B = RPO LE5, Gas, 4cyl., 2.4L, MFI, Alum., DOHC, HO, EcoTec

9th digit: Check Digit

10th digit: Model Year;
Character 7 = 2007
Character 8 = 2008

11th digit: Plant Location;
Character Y = Wilmington, DE, USA

12th -17th digits: Plant Sequence Number;
Also, the quickest way to spot a Red Line vs a naturally aspirated 2.4 L car is the external appearance two primary differences:

  1. Red Line has a dual exhaust exit with one exhaust on each side of the lower real valance where the 2.4 L Naturally aspirated has a single exhaust on the passenger side.

    This is the rear of the standard 2.4 L:

    Keep in mind too, that many owners of the regular cars have re-fitted them with dual exhaust outlets, so dual exhaust outlets is not conclusive. ;)

  2. The 2.4 L naturally aspirated model has a horizontal divider through the air intakes immediately inboard of the fog lights.

    Shown here with the Redline on the left:

None of that really matters, though, because you are enjoying the vehicle. You're in for miles and miles of smiles.

Again, welcome.

Welcome to the Kappa family! The Hydro with the stripes is a real beaut!!
Now for the bad news - the Saturn Sky Red Line, the Opel GT, and the Pontiac Solstice GXP only came with the turbo 2.0 engine. If you have a 2.4 - then it is a base NA and someone may have put Red Line badging on it. There is also the possibility that the engine got changed out but that is usually done with another 2.0 or by installing a higher horsepower V-8 engine.
Truthfully, I cannot imagine why anyone would want to purposely lower the horsepower in thier Kappa.

Excellent reply, Celt03... I had actually also replied, but I didn't realize that my post had been moderated also, and that the initial post of the thread was not approved... dopey operator error... Doh! >.<

As you can also see, I even quoted your excellent post on the VIN number digit translation table.

Thanks again!
