Bottom line for must folks buying a mid $20K car is don't pay over sticker, period! If the only dealer you can find is marking the price over factory sticker, then walk away. You will feel better knowing you didn't give in to greedy dealer who is laughing behind everyone's back who paid over sticker. No doubt these cars will be around for a few years to come. Just be patience and buy it when the price is right. If you can't wait, move on to another car.

This is what I recommend to most of the buyers on this forum. Now if you have more money than common sense, go ahead and pay the markup. The rest of us should just wait until the excitement factor is over.

You have to ask yourself one question... Do I really want one that bad?

I guess I don't have much common sense, but I do have the means to do what I want. After all I fill my car up or heat my house, I pay myself. No commonsense required for that, just good old fossil fuels. Call me any name you want, & I will laugh with you, on the way to the bank! No offense intended, just a rebuttle!:D

I think if it was 3k (or whatever) mark up ACROSS THE BOARD as in every dealership I would feel better about it... but knowing that some dealers are remaining true to the orginal Saturn pricing structure while others are not is what would leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I think knowing that others are enjoying the same thing at a lower price ONLY because they had a more reputable dealer would really bother me. Unlike airfare or other purchases where savy bargain hunters or deal seakers win out over the last minute or hasty buyers, here we have everyone trying as hard as they can to get their dream car only to be exploited for it. That, by principle alone, would cause me to wait... or as I would suggest... find another dealer.

(Perhaps look to colder, or less economicly thriving markets where demand will be lower)

Ernest, you are one of the few that has more money to spend. You can afford to buy what you want when you want it. The word bargin has a different meaning in your vocabulary. I know you will be happy with the car and if money loss doesn't matter to you then you will be ahead of the rest of us. :)

For me, and about 80% of the car buying public, we don't want to spend more money than we really feel appropriate. Bad enough we are willing to spend $24k plus for a car that cost less than $5k in materials. But tooling cost and labor sure cost a lot.

Well put, my friend, and I understand completely, having been there all my life, my intentions were not to gloat, by any means, because that is wrong. My good fortune came at the expense of all my immediate family passing on. I worked and retired as an electrician. I would rather have my family of course, but under the circumstances will make the best of it and be thankful I was blessed. This is all rather new to me, so bear with me. I am still that old country boy, just trying to do what is right.  You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's butt, I know that.:D

the problem is as long as there are people willing to pay the markups, that just encourages them to keep the practice going and even increase the markup more with each new hot car that comes out... which hurts more people than it helps...
I am not retired, but I have worked as an electronics technician, then a electrical and instrumentaion mechanic, and now I am an electrical and instrumentation enginnering technician associate.. I do not have alot of money to just throw away and that is why I think everyone should stick to their guns and refuse to pay dealer markups that are not reasonable, in other words just for the heck of marking them up for a profit...

It is truly a small world. My last big job I worked on was Ameriquest Field, Home of the Texas Rangers. I was there from the git go till opening day.

In South Florida, there are TONS of people with more money than common sense. If my dealership was allotted all 10,000 of these cars, he could probably get them all sold at the $5,000 markup. That's not the point. The point is wealthy people can have anything they want anytime they want it. This car was designed and marketed as a high end toy for regular folks. Too bad the wealthy have the power to suck all the fun out of it.

As i've said before,The auto makers should get rid of the way they sell cars and deal direct with the customer. Cut out the middle man. Then the car could be left at msrp.   Maybe a drive thru kiosk

By law the manufacturer cannot sell direct to the public... there will always be a 'Middleman"

Asked my dealer in Canada and they are not added $$$$$

I was very direct with the dealership in Ontario, I asked point blank if they were going to add extra money to the cost of the Sky and they told me NO. I also added that if I get all the way up there to pick up this car and they have increased the price I will not buy it.
As much as I love this car, I will not buy from a greedy dealership.
If we all stick togeather on this then they cant put up the cost if no one buys them.

Don't reward greed

I put my deposit down on a sky back in may - and am number three on the list at my dealer. I asked - last week if they were selling at MSRP or marking up. They said they would sell at MSRP because they viewed the ongoing trust/relationship with their customers as more valuable than the extra cash they would get in the short run.

Whew! what a relief. If the dealer tries to mark it up higher than MSRP... I will buy something else. Perhaps the Z4. It may cost more but I can afford it and its a matter of principle.

SUNNEY:

I put my deposit down on April 26, 2005. On January 9, 2006 I was summarily informed the price would be MSRP + $5,000.

My friend, consider yourself very lucky.

I personally will not pay over MSRP for this car and feel it is wrong to reward this practice by doing so. That being said, I have come to realize that it is not place to my tell anyone else what to do.

I also do believe in free marketing and outside of things, that are vital to people or necessities like electricity, that the seller can and should get whatever people are willing to pay for a product.

The Sky as much as I feel it is necessity,( I am going to die if I don't get one I Swear) in reality it isn't. So for those of you who have the means to pay the extra for the car and don't mind doing so, go for it! and enjoy your Sky!

What I do not like especially about this situation, is that the image that Saturn and its dealers promote to sell cars, No haggle, no hassle, a fair price and valuing customer loyalty. Then as soon as they get a car that is demand, they throw that out the window for short term greed.

The dealers have a right to make that decision. I will not support them and I will lose my loyatly to the Saturn brand if this turns out to be the norm. :nono:

However, in regards to anybody on the site, how you get your Sky and how much you pay is your business. I will personally celebrate each one of us we get our dream cars!
