Hey heyyy... whats going on Sky community. I recently found out that i am on top of the list for the Redline. which gaurantees my satisfaction and puts my mind at ease.. knowing that i will be driving a sexy and powerful beast around.. right around my b day.. oo yes!!

however... questions arise.. as i was going to purchase a 2002 z3 3.0... i realized. that wow. this car is great. sexy and fast as well.. when i test drove it.. i was amazed at the power.. i wasnt a big fan of window of viewing possibilities.. and it being a convertible. isnt that weird?
yeah somewhat.. actually the same problem i came up with. with test driving the sky... is the hugee.. what seems like the wall troy disrupting my vision while i was driving.. but then again im used to driving different style cars.. soo i am sure its something i can get the hang of.. while im zipping through lanes.. and my hair flowing through the air.. andd.. .. yeah. yous get the point..

but yeah.. what i can to the conclusion of... is that.. the z3.. was plenty fast enough....
so why get the redline?... is the sky fast enough... ... and what is the need for getting the redline... or doing anything for modifications.. on the redline..
if its already the complete package.. why... why. i ask.....

<street racing story removed by moderator. Please see [Rule] No Kill Stories/Street Racing Stories>

now.. the only question is... who else.. plans on making the redline.. something more then just the redline..
i know why i am getting the redline.. question is do any of you guys know...

whether it be. 300. range. 400 hp range.. or maybe even 500 hp.. which i am almost 100% positive it can reach..
does any1 plan on making this at least in the corvette/viper range

id like to considerate myself a competitive individual..
however i am also young.. and can be.. niave when it comes to certain things...

I maybe wrong, but 0-60 in 5.2 secs I would think would smoke quite a few.

Keep it clean--no street racing stories

Talking about running 12's at the drag strip is fine, but traffic-light hot-shoe tales are not permitted.

Please see [Rule] No Kill Stories/Street Racing Stories

Tread lightly. Telling a street racing story, then following up with a post saying you don't condone street racing doesn't cut it. Nor does saying, "You should never do this, it's dumb...." and then describing street racing in the following part of the post.

I've removed the street racing posts from this thread, so if your post is missing, you know why. I've also removed the street racing story from the thread starter.

This thread may be salvageable, so I'm leaving it up as an educational opportunity.

Let's keep it clean out there.

:agree:

Compared with really good cars for example (testing values)

BMW Z4 3.0 - 265 hp/6.600 - 232 lb-ft/2.750 - 0 - 100 km/h = 6.1 s

Boxter 2.7 - 240 hp/6.400 - 199 lb-ft/4.700 - 0 - 100 km/h = 6.0 s

SkyRL 2.0 T - 260 hp/5.300 - 260 lb-ft/2.500 - 0 - 100 km/h = 5.7 s *)

*) estimated

And don't forget the higher price, 40 to 60 % more in germany with similar options.

That little 4 zyl is quite a good engine playing in the same league as the 3 litre 6 zyl

In my opinion the 2.0 SC (LSJ) from the ION RL/Cobalt SS could also have been a fine engine for the Kappas, but GM doesn't offer.

Because I can

Ok why te RL... because I can!

I love my Sky - its got plenty of power and handles like its on rails. However, I have noticed that sometimes when driving - I need to pass somebody. This happens alot when you get caught behind a truck or somebody towing a boat on us1 headded down to key largo. Anyway, the speed at which you can accelerate and pass is important for safety and timing. The Sky will benefit from the extra HP. Its not for racing - its for passing and normal driving when the extra zip can make what would be difficult easy. Its a safety issue.

Now if you buy this I have a tower in Paris to sell you.

:agree:

It's not only the horsepower it's the torque at lower revs that gives you that feeling of "passiv safety".
Therefore that Superchagered engine (LSJ) I mentionend in my post above could have been also a good combination with this roadster.

- 2.4 VVT (LE5) - 177 hp/6,500 - 167 lb-ft/4,900 - 0 - 100 km/h = 7.5 s

- 2.0 SC (LSJ) - 205 hp/5,600 - 200 lb-ft/4,400 - 0 - 100 km/h = 6.5 s *)

- 2.0 T (LNF) - 260 hp/5,300 - 260 lb-ft/2,500 - 0 - 100 km/h = 5.7 s

*) estimated

This roadster isn't born for racing but for cruising :)

Redline 0-60 times

Guys, someone from inside GM (I think it was Jill) posted that GM is estimating 5.3sec on average, but good drivers can get 5.0 sec 0-60 times.

Just FYI....

I plan on adding a boost controller, reflash my ECM, performance exhaust, cold air intake and Eibach lowering springs. I am hoping to get into 350-400hp range.

I love low-end torque. I love the rush of acceleration. If I could own a car that sprinted to 60 in 3 seconds, but had a fuel cutoff at 75mph, it would be just fine with me.

I don't want an LNF-powered car for the high speed aspect. I want the bountiful torque. You get a car that handles like a Vette and accelerates like Mustang GT.

That is what I want. The base motor is not exactly weak. It is plenty powerful enough to make for a fun driving experience. But I want it all, and the stout low-end torque is simply going to put a HUGE smile on my face every time I get out of the car.

And I WONT be racing anyone. Like target shooting, I want the power for my own personal enjoyment and I don't feel the need to compare my results with those of anyone else. It is for my sole, private pleasure. Or Sol pleasure, as the case may be.

ahh yes i know exactly what you mean..
but as far as the street racing part.. i didnt even mention anything of the such...
all i stated.. was.. that when a new corvette pulled up beside us... he sort of showed to us.. whos car was more superior.. i didnt say racing.. i meant just in presence alone.. and in the constant revs of his engine... and then he accelerated away.. no racing.. nothing of the such. so i apologize for the confusion.. and thats why i said i dont condone of street racing..

but yeah.. i understand where you are coming from..
soo anywaysss.. how about them red sox!!

but yeah.. i am hoping... actually.. it should more so be a given. that there should be multiple different turbo upgrading possibilites for the redline..

even though its going to be more scarce then other cars... i believe that tuners will want to tap into the potential of this car...
soo yayyy for US!!

Dude.. Use commas or something?

Or nothing at all? You're lines with tons of pauses could be perfectly fine sentences lol

My brother said he wants to run high 12s low 13s, and go well over 300 RWHP.. It should be a fun experience, when the car gets out of warranty a little further down the road, probably do an engine swap of some sort, not quite sure.

Before I go and buy a mallet conversion do any of you really think it's possible to get the RL up to 400hp?

c
To get 400hp out of the redline would be attainble but pretty stupid. There is no way your going to get it wit the stock turbo. Therefor, you could get the regular sky for less and turbo that. You have to sink some serious dough into a car when you get around that much horsepower. Your looking at new tanny, new differensals, new shafts, just a lot of extras to handle all of that new power. Not worth it to me, if you want to get 400hp get a vette or camaro.

I think it should be possible to tune up the 2.0 engine up to 400 hp and more, that was already possible with the 1992 first Opel 2.0 Turbo up to 430 hp, see link of a small german tuner:

German Opel Tuner

(Hope this is not a forbidden commercial, it's only an example, otherwise mods may delete)

If this high tuning makes any sense is another question.

As ruledawg said it's necessary to change almost all the components in drivetrain (tranny, shafts, diff ...) and brakes/suspension, because most of these parts are the same as in the base sky and at the end of loading capacity, see comparision spec posted here:

http://www.skyroadster.com/forums/showpost.php?p=63305&postcount=11

Another point you have to consider is temperature. High power = HIGH temperature: could be necessary to change watercooler, intercooler, oilcooler and optimize the airflow in the engine compartment.

IMO it's easier (and less costs) to change complete high power components from other applications, similar like Mr. Mallet does.

Or look for a Racing Car :D

to answer my own question and maybe others...

Yes, I found that the RL can achieve around 400hp through modifications, that might or might not void your warranty. (ok, probably) Not to shabby, though. Also, I know there are questions about how an increase in HP might effect the Sky. I am seriously considering a Mallet conversion because I'm a torque junky, so I contacted them about availability and performance concerns. This is their responce:

"Hello Chris,
You need to come up with a Sky , we sold all of are cars !
The Stock Sky Has a 52.0 Front wight bias, The MallettV8
Has a 52.2 Front weight bias, I moved the engine back and over to off set the the drivers weight.
The V8 Solstice ran a 1.02 skid pad on a 29 deg day.
The Vette runs a .98 on a hot day, that tells the story.
The Trans is rated at 330 FT pounds, the C4 Corvette was
310 FT pounds...... and we are a 500 Lbs litigate car.
The Car is not legal for use in California. "

Fortunantly I own a house in Georgia

It looks like the sky RL will cost around 32k. Modifications to 400hp will tack on another 4-7k. (according to performance experts in Los Angeles, whom might or might not be blowing smoke up my tail pipe) A mallet conversion, which drops a 400hp small block v8 into the body will cosy between 39-42k. Pick your poison.

Ok, that's what I've learned so far.

I am looking forward to seeing if I can beat my sister in a race with her 97 Z28, vs my redline. I'm thinking 260hp with such a small car should help. Then she will be real pissed at me ha ha ha ha
