Someone that knows someone says production will begin January 23rd. (that's the date they gave me?) New sales are getting emails saying it is ok to start taking deposits. Something is up?

I hope this production date isn't old news, but the source says it is very reliable! If true, where does this put first cars to public?

im so stoked, cuz rather then having to drive 1 hour to get to the nearest saturn dealer, they are building one rite next to base so i will only have to drive 15 minutes and i will get my sky. once i sell the parts off my getta i will put a downpayment on mine. seems like its a long ways away but its not that bad really.

Actually the dealers have been taking deposits for months, I put mine down back in May... I talked to my dealer Saturday and he says they are still being told Middle of March is when deliveries will begin.

I kNOW dealers have been taking deposits, I am #3 in the Detroit area, but that was up to the dealers if they wanted to start that or not. A sales person from Ann Arbor said she received an email from Saturn that was outlining how and what they should start doing. This is a little different than just the local owners!
I am sure we will all start receiving some clarification with in the next couple of months. :)

You didn't make it clear about that in your post. you left out some of the information (A sales person from Ann Arbor said she received an email from Saturn that was outlining how and what they should start doing).... I apologize for not understanding.
"Starting Production" is a very nebulous term. That could mean a significant number of things - up to and including "pilot" or "pre-production" cars, cars that cannot be sold, etc.

Solstice production - NOBODY knows when production "started". The term "start of production" is worthless - all that counts is what Delnari said - when the first cars are "Delivered".

The first Solstice was "delivered" August 5, 2005. It actually made it to the dealer sometime that following weekend. When was that car built? Who knows, and who cares? Sometime in July or earlier? Who cares is the point.

I say THAT is the only date that matters. We went throught this on the Solstice, don't fall into the same darn trap for the Sky. All that matters is when the cars start reaching the customers - all the rest is claptrap. Start of production was rumored to be from anywhere between January 2005 and July 2005.

ACTUAL start of production for the Solstice? ABSOLUTE unknown - strictly because this is undefined - do you mean the first driveable car off the end of line, the date that the first delivered car entered the body shop or off the end of the line (may be a week's difference between the two)? The date this first car got a VIN assigned? Or do you mean the first "sellable" cars off the end of the line.... ALL of these different dates. ALL of them meaningless.

The problem is you CANNOT predict this delivery date - it's like the delivery of a baby - you know it's coming, it's ABOUT 40 weeks from conception.... ACTUAL hour of delivery??????? Only heaven knows.

So, when you get someone "inside" that is all anxious to tell you they have information of when the Sky "starts up" or "starts production" or all that.... tell 'em you know that those dates really only matter to internal scheduling within GM - what's most important is WHEN will the FIRST CUSTOMER be able to DRIVE THEIR CAR HOME from the dealership?

Take it from me, nobody on the inside or outside can tell you that. Not even Lutz himself. ;)

Kappaman makes a good argument on delivery date vs producton date. I've been told that pre-production cars are now being made in small numbers. If the Sky follows the same pattern as the Solstice then expect over 600 cars to be produced for testing and what not before official production begins.

Best guess is that we will be able to place official orders for the car by Thanksgiving timeframe. As an example, my Solstice order was picked up by GM on May 27 and built on August 5, and delivered August 22. And that car was number 206 off the line. If the same schedule holds up with the Sky then expect 2 1/2 months from the time GM picks up orders to delivery date. That would put delivery in middle to late March if the cars start production at the beginning of the year.
I'm betting we won't see delivery on anything until May! I am of course going by the terms of the win a Sky contest. I know that up here in Canada it will be that long for sure.
I am like kappaman who cares when the first one comes off the line. What counts is when the first one is drove off by someone. The Old check in the mail thing. As for me just getting my name on one and knowing I will get it at some point is the date I worry about. Looking in the Sky for a Sky.
everytime I go into my Saturn of Orlando dealership for my free car wash and detail. they go out of there way to hook me up with lunch,.. Saturn Rocks,.. but that's beside the point....

The main guy runnin the joint, the head honcho,.. whos a great guy,... keeps tellin me they will have some Sky's in December 05'. Now, I read somewhere that GM set's a later date of arrival, such as April 06', so that they'll have plenty of extra time to get the cars out by the latest deadline if they have to. I mean the solstice is already out and its pretty much the same car, so any glitches they need to fix will be fixed early. Who know's,.. Just don't expect December 05' and you won't get dissapointed, but if it does, that would rock!!!! :willy:
Your dealer, if he is referring to "have[ing] some Sky's in December 05" as in for retail sale, he is 100% wrong. Do not place ANY value in this claim.

The Saturn Sky is a 2007 model year vehicle. It cannot be sold or be available for sale (by law) prior to January 1, 2006.

It may be possible that he has a pre-production car that is available for ride & drives, but that does NOT mean they will be able to be sold.

Delnari's estimates look much better, read his post previous:

SATURN'S OFFICIAL STANCE (PER THEIR OWN CALENDAR) IS SPRING 2006.
Questions

I assume all of the Solstices and Skys will be built at the same plant. Is that right? Anybody happen to know whether the 30K production figure I've heard is correct and that it refers to combined Solstice/Sky production?

They will both be produced in the same plant on the same production lines.

The 30k is for Solstice + Sky and possibly Opel production numbers.
I would really like to see the e-mail that the retailer claims to have gotten. I am not even aware of any images being released yet. Kappa? Are there images? And can you clear up if we (retailers) are going to get a "ride & drive" SKY? If it will make things easier, they can just leave me the one they are bringing in November for our SKY event. :D
Cheers,
Jill

I purchased this vehicle back in late September & have been told by my dealership of purchase that I am to expect to be in the vehicle by late April, so who knows. If anyone has any further information please let me know I'm dying here from waiting.
