Smaller Aftermarket Rear View Mirror?

431 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  LAC Sky
Has anyone replaced the factory OnStar mirror on the Sky with something that doesn't take as much viewing area from the windshield? I want better vision looking out the front of the car and I think OnStar has been discontinued anyway on the Sky so I figured now is the time.
Thanks

The problem with aftermarket mirrors is the small number that include map lights. Since the Sky has no dome light those are important if you want interior lighting at night. You are correct that the OnStar in the Sky is no longer functional, so lighting is the only real consideration.

I am not aware of anyone finding a mirror with lights that is smaller than stock, but there may be one out there.
I have a non-OnStar mirror in my Sol. Maybe that is an option? It's smaller

Did it come from a non-OnStar equipped Solstice?
I would love to lose the Blonde Star Mirror in my wife's Sky, and replace it with a mirror that has 2 or 3 "Homelink" buttons and also Map Lights.
If anyone comes across this Unicorn, please post it.
I think GenTec mirrors might be an option. Many have options that vary from temp, compass, auto-darkening and map lights, I think some have the home link bottom as well. Go to CarMax and go shopping for what car has what you’re looking for as a starting point and then onto EBay or your favorite aftermarket shopping zone

I installed a non Onstar GM mirror in my Sky this winter. Still has map lights & compass, but I believe it’s the same size mirror. What’s your look like?
Before you go to the trouble and expense of replacing it, have you tried just re-positioning it upwards? The arm that holds the mirror has a pivot point at both ends, so you can pivot the window end up, and the mirror end back down to compensate.

On the other hand, one of my favorite mods as been to use an autodimming mirror, so I always recommend everyone to swap to one of those (of course, it's no smaller though :( )

Another option some of us have done, is to pop the ‘button‘ off (the metal tab that holds the mirror to the windshield) and re-glue it higher up.

It might not seem like a lot, but for those of us who’ve gone through what you’re feeling, it’s a night & day experience.

The attached image below was me experimenting with a spare button to see what worked best for what I wanted (bottom button is the standard location and top was the spare). When I get back to it, I’ll use black GorillaWeld to glue it back in place at the top spot.

I also went with a Gentex mirror from a ‘17 Elantra that has homelink (3 garage door open buttons), auto dim and a hidden compass (it’s all mirrored until I turn it on and only the compass lettering appears, not the black box of older models. This version doesn’t have the map lights, but I’ve never used those anyways, so wouldn’t miss them if they weren’t there.

@Super Serg : Have you removed the original mounting buton? If you haven't be aware that sometimes removing them will damage the glass. Heating the mount with a hot air gun will help, but there is always risk of glass damage.

Yeah, it’s definitely a concern.

I removed the top one from a parts car, no issue. But I heat them up, use a flat scraping blade and take as much time as needed so I don’t damage the windshield.
Did I read somewhere that removing OnStar screws up the ECU or something?

The CAN Bus communicates through the OnStar communication module, so removing that disrupts the network unless the circuit is jumpered in the wiring harness.

Removing the OnStar mirror has no effect.
