The "Because We Can" mark up

I'm new here so if this is an old topic please forgive me. I just put my deposit on the chili red, tan seats and tan top. I was a little suprised about the "Because We Can" mark up they said I had to purchase. Is this standard for every dealership? This brings my car to almost $2000 more than I had planned on. Oh well, mine won't be here until next year so I have time to change my mind.

Not only do you have time to change your mind...but you have time to CHANGE DEALERS! And for the record, no, it is not standard for every dealership. Just my opinion...but I wouldn't pay $2k over. Shop around and find yourself a dealer that won't price gouge "just because they can". :nono:
This topic has been covered, and covered, and covered...but that's ok as you haven't read them yet. Try looking up the older threads. Most dealers are not charging above MSRP, but some are...how should I put it, 'helping to keep the lights on in the show room' so to speak.
You will find hours of entertaining:lol: and boring:rolleyes: threads that cover this subject. Happy hunting!
Definately look around at other dealers, especially if you are waiting till next year. I have been in contact with 5 dealers within a 100 miles of me and it ranges to no extra add ons to $3,000 mandatory dealer add-ons.
Get your $500 back (if you can), and shop elsewhere...............
Shop around

Don't pull your deposit yet, call Saturn Customer Assistance and report this to them, it may not help you but it could help the next guy. If there are enough compliants Saturn can adjust there allocation to push them to do the right thing. They don't have to change there policy but there is no sense in letting them off the hook and walking away. Next remember alot of Saturn Dealers are parts of Dealer groups 3-4-5-6 area dealerships. If yours has this policy the whole group does so to save headaches make sure of Dealers in same group and call outside that group and find there policies. In the Chicago area there are at leat 4 groups that I know of with multiple dealerships only one is charging over msrp. But if you get on a list at another make sure your not number 20 or more on the list or you won't see a Sky til next year. The group I bought my Sky from (delivered in March) changed there policy on charging over list so canceled my redline order. I called the smallest dealers in the other groups in the area and I am the first on the list for redline with contract for msrp. so it is still possible. Another possibility buy used later on when my Redline gets a build date I will be putting mine up for sale.

Is it really

You might ask some questions - for example my local Saturn Dealer (Northeast Ohio) says that on a vhicle like the Vue that nearly every customer either ordered or came back after purchase and added the all weather floor mats and mud/splash guards - so they decided to include as standard on all their Vues a package deal those accessories and the environmental protection (includes items such as a scotch-guard type interior protection and some kind of paint sealant) - this package adds something like $1500 to the base price - but it includes actual products and services added to the car that have some value.

What is not good is if the sticker in the window shows one price but then you have to pay some other price because of add ons which are not documented and therefore a bit more difficult to identify and verify. Or if there is an item on the sticker such as dealer destination charge or dealer mark-up. On the the other hand I do not know if the $575 or so destination charge includes things like the dealer peeling off the protective stickers and such that are on the car when it leaves the plant.

I suppose the only way to be sure is to get a quote for a specific set of features and options in writing and take that to one or more other dealers to see if the total comes out the same.

My local dealer mentioned that is is likely that the base price on the next model year will increase by $1500 to $2000. Of course that may depend on the market demand and coudl include additional features such as height adjustable seats or side air-bags.

No not standard, only the greediest dealers are doing it. The one's who will hopefully lose future customers!!! Pay back can be sweet...
Never never would i pay over sticker unless i wanted this car really really really bad which is not possible so far because that cars does not exside.opps
short story friend visted a dealer Wanted me to call the salesmen back for his finalise deal anyways asked what price was said 9% over sticker WHAT I TOLD HIM then my final words to him where listen my friend won't be paying you 3000 over sticker matter of fact he won't pay you 500 over and as far as me goes i would not give you 10 dollars over sticker this car in not a ferrail then i told him saturns companys does not aprove of this he said yes i know then before he otter another word i hung up . but thats me

now my frend is paying msrp at other dealer.

so if every body use my aproach we all pay msrp but that will never happen

boy back in the day i loved english where did those days go. lol
Definitely refuse any add-on package that you don't want. Most state A.G.'s frown on such practices. As to Saturn dealers doing markups just because seems to run against the traditional Saturn creed that there will never be a different price between dealers for the exact same car at the exact same time. Or, was all we saw on the tv just a bunch of hogwash? That is what was supposed to set Saturn dealers apart from all the rest.
Mark-up

The local dealer called today, he said three SKY's were available today, black silver, grey, all standard shifts, I know I was # 30 on the call me list, well anyway, I asked if they were at MSRP, he said he wanted $1000.00 over retail, If he does not call back and offer the car at sticker, I am not interested. I didn't think of asking him if he was going to give me 1k, over retail on my honda civic... I love cars but I can wait untill they are giving deals, last summer I got a new silverado, and I paid what I wanted to pay, I know these cars are in demand, but I won't let someone push me around,

They aren't haggling, it is just take it or leave it, and they will find a different buyer. :jester:
As I posted elsewhere...

My Dealer was GREAT

They kept their first SKY specifically as a showroom car, and let nobody in it and let nobody drive it. When an owner cancelled, THAT was the car that the used to let serious people test drive. When mine came in, no crap, no hassle. It had 12 miles on it - just what the factory did and one roll off the truck. They even let me drive it to the gas station and they paid to fill it up with 91.

So my service, and my dealership, was absolutely first class across the board. Of course, I paid MSRP plus $2,995 and I got the second imaged and the second delivered car.

Could it possibly be that by not jerking them around they didn't jerk me around? The old "you get what you pay for" treatment?

You have to make up your own mind, of course. For me, it was worth it. WAY worth it. I am going to drive mine up Pacific Coast Higway from Los Angeles to Monterey tomorrow...:driving: I'd have paid almost the premium for round-trip airfare for two, and only have a bag of peanuts to keep when I was done.

Just an idea folks. If want a primo car and primo service, be prepared to pay primo dollars and you will probably get what you want. Just a friendly tip from a guy with one in the garage.

I think i would have said "Because I can I am walking off your lot and going somewhere else, You have now lost a return customer, and i will never be back on your lot, I will tell everyone you are doing this and report this action to Saturn and you will lose much more than you are marking this car up."

FYI if you are quoting someone's post, please use the "Quote buttion" to reply.

No all dealers are not marking up the Sky... if you don't like what they are doing, call Saturn customer service and report them, then go somewhere else...
My friend has been trying to buy a Corvette Z06. He's entitled to a GM discount, but can't even find a dealer that will sell at sticker. Most dealers want 10-25K over invoice. Basically, the dealer owns the car- not GM.
I know you want it NOW!

Like the title says,...but if you can wait you will get ,a better deal, your price , choice of color, options, and a car that is not the first year, which everybody avoids, when buying a used car, which it will be after you drive it(think resale) I would rather wait, I have been waiting ever since I heard of the car Pontiac was building somewhare around 04,now that I have seen the sky, I like it better, now I can get some HP, If I am willing to wait
