Okay, first results are in...
I put a stubby on my car, and so far so good. The station that used to come in strong on AM still comes in strong with the stubby. The station that was scratchy while in the garage is just a little bit more scratchy with the stubby, but clear when out of the garage. So while the signal might not be as strong as the 3-foot whip, it's passable. Of course, I'm in metropolitan L.A. and not in the middle of nowhere... But the signal strength is fine for me - and, amazingly, both with the antennae up as well as fully retracted. Here's a photo of a distracting 3-foot whip, and two pics of the stubby both retracted and extended.
It was cheap. This is the "Model B" from Carccessory.
