I have a black top and its pretty faded. I was thinking about washing it then airbrushing/spray painting it black again might work, but not sure.

Has anyone restored a faded top before, what approach do you recommend?

I lightly spray painted faded fabric dash board speaker grilles in a Fiero. That was a bad idea. they developed a permanent wrinkle. I ended up buying new ones.

What to use? All I know is, not paint.

Agreed, definitely not paint. You need a dye.

The problem is that the top is made of water-resistant fabric, and you need penetration to get good color.

Rit has a product named Dye-More that is supposed to be effective on synthetics, so it may be worth a try.

I got a used top that was ingret shape but splotchy from being stored folded up. After much research, UK seems to the only place to find dye. I used these off Amazon and both worked so well I pulled the carpet and used it on it as well..
